Here's how all this plays out: House unable to elect Speaker on Jan 3 or many days after. There can be no joint session to count electoral votes before the House gets a Speaker, Jan 6 or later. If no Speaker by noon Jan 20: Acting President Chuck Grassley ASSUME DEER DEAD

This is some cray-cray detail reporting and makes me guess that most of these Freedom Caucus folks will not be enthusiastic supporters of the Highway Trust Fund reaitjorization bill…
New: Last night at 9:15 pm, Johnson held a meeting with members about suspending the gas tax, something Andy Harris was pushing for. It quickly delved into chaos. Rep. Sam Graves brought in a printed out Andy Harris tweet from 2022 where he opposed suspending the gas tax, something Harris was now advocating for. Harris got livid. "This is fucking war!" he yelled slamming his hands on the table. "This is war!" Rep. Clay Higgins then stood up and called Graves a "disrespectful fool." Sources described it as one of the craziest meetings they've witnessed. More from inside that meeting: washingtonsun.com/congress/h…

FYI possible House vote this week on suspending federal excise tax on gasoline and thus making the Highway Trust Fund that much less solvent.
Members of the HFC held out on the rule vote because they want a vote to lower gas prices, which are sky high due to the war in Iran. House GOP leadership said they would consider a vote to suspend the federal gas tax, but need broad-based buy in from the conference.

Instead of a regular issue of ETW this week, we have a special edition focusing on the changes that the 9.11 attacks brought to transportation, assembled by my colleague @profplotch with tons of expert content: enotrans.org/eno-transportat…

Commemorative Freedom 250 Grand Prix cards were made available at select stations this morning. Team Metro quickly identified a defect in the card technology which makes them unusable. We’ve temporarily removed all cards from the system and are making small quantities available this evening starting with L’Enfant Plaza station. We will share additional card locations as they are identified. We apologize for this inconvenience.

ICYMI over the weekend the House Budget Committee filed its report on the new budget blueprint the House will vote on this week, confirming that the budget would not allow the spending increases provided by the @TransportGOP @TransportDems BUILD America 250 Act...

The new FY27 House budget resolution does not have a reserve fund for surface transportation, meaning that the spending increases in the House's BUILD America 250 Act would violate this budget and there is no straightforward way to fix it.

Had I been invited to the lunch with King Charles, I would have brought along the copy of the Senate Manual that he was given during his 1970 visit to the Capitol, which he must have accidentally misplaced because I found it in a used book store for $20

The Wire ended 18 yrs ago today. It’s been taught in Ivy League schools, law schools & film schools. David Simon was interviewed by a sitting president about its lasting impact. Cited in a State Supreme Court ruling. Often hailed by critics as the best ever. Never won an Emmy.

The most commonly encountered price for diesel has jumped from $3.69/gal a week ago to... $4.99/gal today. Can't underscore what a massive jolt this is to the logistics, trucking, ag sectors.

Treasury finally released the detailed breakdown of federal Highway Trust Fund finances for the last fiscal year (2025). $45.4 billion in actual taxes on highway users was about $29 billion short of spending, covered mostly by spend-down of the big bailout transfer made in 2021.

I’m honestly shocked how few people I talked to today have seen Wargames. It’s literally about an AI nearly destroying the world when it plays a game of Global Thermonuclear War. What would Stephen Falken think about the Anthropic / DOD fight?
