"In baseball and in life, the people who swing hardest tend to miss more often."
Failure. It is simply a part of being a leader. The thing some leaders forget in the midst of the chaos, is that often times the amount of eventual success is proportional to the amount of risk and failure we endure along the way. Read more: preview.mailerlite.io/previe…

Remember: no evidence fidget devices help; some evidence they actually hinder.
Anyone else experienced "fidget devices" suddenly flooding a primary school?!

I think we need to be realistic that class teachers are not Ed Psychs, psychologists, therapeutic experts, bouncers, social workers, the police etc. There needs to be a full recognition that their role is to teach the curriculum, not be all things to all people spread too thin.

Behaviour is the key to almost every element of school improvement. The number of people who don’t get this staggers me.

“I have ADHD” or “He is black” or “He has had a hard life” …so we can’t expect very much of them… They are VICTIMS! Bloody insulting. On Strictly, I explore why victimhood ruins lives. 👇 youtu.be/Jo-oP7K-BTQ

This. 👇 The root cause is NOT unmet needs. It is missing values. Teach kids small c conservative values! Hold them accountable! Stop indulging them. Get rid of your white/privileged/boring guilt! And be an adult!!
I have never seen a pupil return to school after multiple suspensions & change their behaviour. It has never shocked them onto a different path,it accelerated the one they were already on.We need to address the root cause of the behaviour that is driving it & find another way.

Damn, he beat me.
If you don't want to get suspended, don't do the things that get you suspended It's not complicated

🚨Why are so many students struggling with math? CBC just released an audio documentary on math education in Canada - a bit like a mini Sold a Story for math. They cover a lot in 25 mins: problems with education research, where math instruction has gone wrong, what needs to change. Please have a listen 🎧 cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-6…

Fact #5: Cell phones have done more to hurt classroom attention than any curriculum change.

My latest is a review of "The Science of Discipline," by Nathan Maynard who wants us to view student misbehavior as an unmet need, a form of communication, and an opportunity to teach new skills. It's a humane idea but ultimately does kids a disservice. thenext30years.substack.com/…

Schools improve because leaders create systems that improve student outcomes. A principal can be beloved by staff and still lead a school where only 35% of students read proficiently. Dr. Marty Haberman would say, “If you are not careful, you’ll love them to death.”

Nobody talks about the student who came ready to learn, sat through the disruption, said nothing, and fell further behind while every adult in the building focused on the one who made the most noise. She is still waiting for someone to notice she was there, too.

Reading Reconsidered is solid. Just good, traditional teaching.
I was listening to a couple of middle school teachers last night share about their success with Reading Reconsidered. Their faces lit up when they talked about the improvements in their students’ vocabulary, fluency, writing, and attendance. Yes, attendance. They said that the students loved the books being read and taught in class so much that they didn’t want to miss a day. Their classes were full even on the last day of school because they were finishing their final book and the students didn’t want to miss the ending. Who would have guessed? When schools provide meaningful content, effective instruction, and quality literature, students will know and appreciate it, and will make the effort to attend. Wonder of wonders.

The soft bigotry of low expectations, presented as empathy, compassion, and tolerance, is a 1st order threat to our children’s education - trapping them in illiteracy and lifelong dependency.
