Centuries before dental clinics, the ancient Maya used sophisticated jade fillings to treat toothaches. For decades, archaeologists have uncovered Maya teeth decorated with precious stones like jade and pyrite. Traditionally, researchers believed these alterations were purely cosmetic, representing a form of ancient 'grill' for social status or rituals. However, a new analysis of a back molar containing a jade inlay is challenging this assumption. Since this hidden tooth would not have been visible in normal social interactions, researchers suggest the procedure was functional. Further examination using 3D imaging revealed calcification within the tooth's pulp, indicating that the individual was alive when the filling was placed and that the procedure was likely done to relieve pain or treat a cavity. The study also highlighted the incredible durability of the organic cement used to bind these stones to the teeth. Analysis of these ancient sealants revealed a mixture of calcium, phosphates, bitumen, and essential oils that have remarkably outlasted modern-day fillings. Many of these jade inlays have remained firmly in place for over a millennium, showing that Maya practitioners possessed advanced pharmaceutical and metallurgical skills. These findings suggest that the Maya were not only masters of aesthetic modification but also pioneer dentists who developed enduring therapeutic treatments long before the era of modern medicine. source: Mata-Castillo, E., Cucina, A., Ramírez-Salomón, M., Monsreal-Peniche, M. A philosopher stood in a TV Studio in 1984 and disproved artificial consciousness with a single locked room thought experiment. the interview captures John Searle presenting his famous Chinese Room argument, explaining why a computer passing the Turing test still understands nothing. he asked the host to imagine a man locked inside a room with a massive rulebook. the man speaks zero Chinese. people slide Chinese "squiggle" symbols under the door, he matches them using the rules, and slides the correct response back out. to anyone outside, the room appears to speak fluent Chinese. but neither the man nor the rulebook actually understands a single word. he proved the fundamental difference between syntax and semantics. manipulating uninterpreted formal symbols is not the same as understanding meaning. 40 years later, AI labs claim their trillion-parameter models are developing inner thoughts and reasoning. the models are just gigantic Chinese Rooms, running trillions of matrix multiplications to slide the next token under the door. founders sell sentient machines to investors. a philosopher exposed the trick 40 years ago.

Engravings from the 19th century depicting the so-called 'phenomena' of BALL LIGHTNING... Some have claimed the video here is 'fake'... Yet many have observed these erratically moving glowing ORBS during severe thunderstorms, and there are many 'theories'... Russian scientist Vladimir Torchigin contends the phenomenon isn't lightning but a BUBBLE OF LIGHT that becomes trapped inside a 'sphere of air.' Particles can be absorbed and emit electromagnetic radiation during a storm. He theorised that this LIGHT in a pressurised sphere was a 'billion times' more potent than light moving in a straight line... Another explanation it's claimed is that these spheres of FIERY LIGHT are formed from the 'electrical charge' a LIGHTNING STRIKE generates. SILICON in the soil combines with CARBON and OXYGEN. The oxygen and carbon form SILICON VAPOUR that cools and creates a cloud of 'fine dust'. Could this be PLASMA DUST? What do you know of it?...

Aztec Sun Stone. Photograph: New York State Archives, 1886. When the city of Tenochtitlan fell following the Spanish conquest, the Catholic clergy didn't immediately destroy this monument. Instead, in the 1550s, Archbishop Alonso de Montúfar had the stone buried face-down beneath the city's main square, the Zócalo. He did this to completely erase the ancient beliefs and pagan sacrificial rituals from the indigenous people's memory. The monument remained buried for over two centuries. In December 1790, workers doing routine paving and drainage work in the square accidentally struck the basalt block with their pickaxes. Once unearthed, the stone was mounted on the outside wall of the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral's western tower, as you can see in the photograph. During the Mexican-American War in 1847, American soldiers occupying the square used this historic artifact on the cathedral wall as a target for rifle practice. Some of the physical damage on the central deity's face is attributed to these bullet strikes. In 1885, the Aztec Sun Stone was removed from its spot and relocated to a museum.
