This new video from @RoBuilderYT is straight facts, from the title alone you can imagine what it's about. It highlights how many developers simply pursue trends nowadays because it's what "works", and very few actually make original and innovative games. Whilst I understand that there is a finite number of ideas for people to make games about, too many people don't even try to be creative and just completely copy the games that are doing well right now.
It's sad that so many people prioritize the short-term funds and CCU over quality and creative ideas that will form a dedicated audience and last for a long time. I have massive respect for those studios who work on creative projects for long periods and don't fall victim to this trap. Yeah, when your game isn't working, by all means move onto something new, but these people who just chase trends around and make it seem like they're great developers are crazy.
But arguably the biggest problem about all this is that often, the people who do innovate aren't successful at all, and only a tiny number are MEGA successful (PLS DONATE, DOORS, etc). Seems like there's no in-between when it comes to blowing up original games now. To be clear, I'm criticizing this "trend-following" culture by players, not the developers who play into it, because I completely see why people fall into this trap after their ideas that are actually creative fail. It's wild to me that so many players want to play these low-quality lazy games all the time and it's discouraging when the games that actually innovate often don't get the respect they deserve.
The 10 reasons he has in the video for why following trends are bad are:
1. Lack of originality
2. Short-lived popularity
3. Burnout from constant new trends (+ no stable income)
4. Audiences expect these games to all be similar so you have limited creative freedom
5. Too much competition
6. Quantity over quality - you have to make too many compromises in quality to get games out quickly
7. Brand alignments - it's hard to build a recognizable brand/studio from short-lived trend games
8. Pressure against innovation - players want familiar games so you're restricted in adding new things
9. Limited learning opportunities - it's hard to learn new skills or knowledge about other genres if you're making the same things all the time
10. Missed passion projects - you aren't making projects you're genuinely passionate about because you prioritize short-term success
I agree with all of them.
