"Mary Howden, of the Women’s Rights Network Scotland, condemned the move and said: “We cannot believe independent scrutiny is being ditched at a time when three serving officers have been convicted of rape in the past year, one died while accused, 45 others are currently suspended over serious allegations and thousands more are still waiting to be vetted. Whenever yet another rogue officer is exposed, the Chief Constable promises openness and transparency.
“Now we learn there will be no independent scrutiny for the majority of officers, only high-ranking ones. But it is frontline officers who have most contact with vulnerable women and abuse victims, and those are the ones who have been found guilty of abuse.”
Six years after the recommendations of the Elish Angiolini review were accepted, independent misconduct panels will now apply only to the most senior officers – those at Assistant Chief Constable level and above. eu1.hubs.ly/H0z9tX20

To coincide with Stacey Dooley’s 'Fallen Women', which shares the story behind our Fallen Women campaign and co-founder Jhiselle Feanny’s years of work seeking answers and change following the death of her sister, Bianca ‘Bee’ Thomas, KW are publishing our new national report, ‘Fallen Women – Bee’s Law’, led and authored by Jhiselle.
killedwomen.org/fallen-women
Drawing on national policing data and new Freedom of Information research, the report sets out the case for a consistent, precautionary investigative response to the deaths of women following falls from height, where domestic abuse may be relevant.
● ‘Bee’s Law’: A national precautionary standard for falls from height and other unexpected deaths where domestic abuse may be relevant.
“The fall is a mechanism, not the context.
Women have been falling from height since the dawn of time. The context has too often gone unexplored and misunderstood – until now.”
● The recommendation: Implement Bee's Law now as a national operational policing standard, beginning with deaths following a fall from height where domestic abuse is known, suspected or cannot reasonably be excluded. Legislative or code-based underpinning can develop in parallel; the core safeguards should not wait for a pilot.

Women only spaces matter to women who have been subjected to men's violence.
nia was the first UK specialist organisation for women victim-survivors to say that they would use the Equality Act to provide services for women by women.
Please donate as a show of support if you can.
"Women only spaces are safe spaces. As a victim-survivor of sexual abuse at the hands of the opposite sex, it would be very triggering to talk to men about my trauma, experience, and feelings." This week you can show support and double the difference: donate.biggive.org/campaign/…

Our Head of Policy, Stephanie Millar, participated in a roundtable discussion on child poverty and public debt at the Scottish Parliament last week, alongside Aberlour, Money Advice Scotland, the Child Poverty Action Group and COSLA.
Drawing on our research into coerced debt, Stephanie highlighted how economic abuse can leave women facing debts they did not choose, pushing families further into poverty and making it harder for survivors to rebuild their lives.
Public debt systems must recognise the impact of domestic abuse and ensure women are not penalised for debts caused by perpetrators. Tackling child poverty means addressing these barriers and ensuring survivors can access the support they need to recover.

Domestic abuse slowly erodes your sense of self. Many survivors describe feeling like they were never enough—never smart enough, attractive enough, quiet enough, or devoted enough to stop the criticism, the rage, or the withdrawal.
Over time, you're left emotionally drained and full of self-doubt, endlessly bending yourself in hopes of finally being “good enough” to be loved. 💔

This October, our #MentalHealthSpotlight is focusing on the relationship between domestic abuse and mental health.
Domestic abuse can affect every part of a woman’s life, including her mental health and emotional well-being. The impact can be immediate, but it can also continue long after the abuse has stopped.
Over the month, we’ll look at trauma responses, coercive control, barriers to mental health support, children and young people’s well-being, recovery and what trauma-informed support should look like.

The @Sunday_Post #ItsTme campaign was launched on the 23 August only a matter of weeks away. This thread explores what we have achieved to date.
Thank you to @ladymcbeth2
It has achieved something few public campaigns ever manage : it has moved violence against women and girls from a subject of concern to a matter of national action.
By bringing together survivors, bereaved families, charities, experts, employers, sporting organisations, cultural figures and politicians, the campaign has helped create momentum for change across Scotland. The campaign has secured engagement from the highest levels of government, influenced public debate, generated national media attention and, most importantly, begun translating awareness into practical commitments.

UNISON, ASLEF, USDAW and the Musicians’ Union are boycotting Labour’s Women’s Conference because its formal proceedings are reserved for women.
That is the betrayal at the heart of this dispute. Union leaders have taken political representation purchased by women workers and thrown it away to make an ideological gesture against women organising as a sex.

Domestic abuse is everyday business in the Family Court. Yet too many victims tell me they've been failed by a system meant to protect them
If govt wants to halve VAWG, the family court must be better equipped to spot domestic abuse & victims must have better access to legal aid
🗣️ 'So many people have said to me, you have to look into the family courts.'
Sky's @Mollie_Malone1 explains how her investigation revealed failures in family courts and how women, particularly victims of abuse, feel 'shut out' of the system.

KW co-founder Carole Gould and Nick Gazzard, whose young daughters were both murdered by ex-partners, spoke to the BBC about how the Cirencester stabbing case highlights the importance of improving education and sentencing around domestic violence.
bbc.com/news/articles/c6lyr9…
Carole, whose 17-year-old daughter Ellie was murdered in 2019, said that the non-custodial sentence the 14-year-old was given was misogynistic and sent completely the wrong message. She stressed how societal change was needed, starting with harder-hitting education in schools – continuing up to the age of 18 – about violence against women and girls.
Nick Gazzard, whose 20-year-old daughter Hollie was killed in 2014, and set up the Hollie Gazzard Trust @HollieGazzardT, which teaches groups of young boys in schools about dealing with rejection, was also very disappointed with the sentence.
