Travel is going so premium that airports like SFO and Dulles are building a second airport for their best customers. At LAX, it already exists. For $1,295, a company called PS checks you in at its own building, runs you through TSA there, and drives you across the tarmac to your plane. You never set foot in the terminal. And for the right trip, it's actually not that expensive. A private suite for up to four is $4,950. For a family already flying business class, that's about $1,240 each. It's also $230 less than four tickets to the shared lounge, which is 21+ anyway. PS opened at LAX in 2017 and Atlanta in 2023, then opened DFW and Miami in the same month this June. The Miami one is in Pan Am's old headquarters, restored with five suites and an open-air courtyard. Now other airports want their own. SFO just closed bids for a private terminal, with an award targeted for December. It could open as soon as late 2028. Dulles is building one too, and the fight over it got ugly. PS bid, lost to the company that runs Dublin's airport, and sued. A federal judge threw the case out in August. The Dulles terminal is expected to take about 30 months to build. The airlines are building a lighter version inside the terminal. Delta One has private check-in rooms at eight hubs, and at LAX and JFK its passengers clear security on a premium path and walk straight to the lounge. United, American, BA, and Alaska have their own versions. I used to think the big divide in flying was the seat. Now that's just the part everyone can see. The bigger split happens before you board, as airports and airlines rebuild around their best customers and leave everyone else in the old terminal.
