🇷🇺 On September 8 in Jerusalem, on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the start of the Siege of Leningrad, Ambassador of Russia to Israel Anatoly Viktorov and his spouse took part in a ceremony to lay wreaths and flowers at the Monument to the heroic defenders and residents of besieged Leningrad “Candle of Remembrance”. He also delivered a speech at a conference at the Museum of the Jewish Soldier in Latrun, organized by the All-Israeli Association of Refugees and Holocaust Survivors. In his address, Anatoly Viktorov emphasized that the Siege of Leningrad ranks alongside such hideous crimes against humanity as the Holocaust, the death camps and the punitive actions carried out by Nazi collaborators against civilians. Recalled that on October 22, 2020 the St. Petersburg City Court recognized the actions of Germany and its collaborators from 11 other European countries as “a war crime, a crime against humanity, and genocide against national and ethnic groups comprising the population of the USSR, the peoples of the Soviet Union”. Pointed out the shared approaches of Russia and Israel to preserving historical memory, which is a common value and a cornerstone of cooperation between our countries. Against the backdrop of current revanchist sentiments in Germany and its militarization, expressed doubt regarding the historical repentance of the current German leadership for the crimes committed by the Nazis during World War II.
