ALT The cover of the September 2023 issue of the journal Isis, featuring an oil painting by Vincenzo Campi. The caption from the inside front cover describes it this way: This painting, titled Fishmongers (ca. 1580), lavishly displays fish to evoke wonder about Nature’s bounty among its elite viewers, while, simultaneously, it illustrates a taxonomy of humans based on work and nutrition. In a wet landscape in the back, peasants catch fish which were not for their consumption; a more typical food staple for low-born people was beans, as depicted in a different section of the painting (not pictured here). Apparently informed by proverbs, natural history, and dietetics, the painting offers a glimpse of how resources were understood in the early modern world.

ALT Call for applications for the HSS editorial practicum. It is due September 4 to [email protected], and consists of a cover letter, CV, and contact information for two references. It is described in part this way: Over the course of an eight-week term of study online, participants will shadow the co-editors of Isis and take part in the life of the journal. This will involve approximately 4 hours of scheduled time per week. The curriculum will include discussion sessions and practical work in manuscript review, mentorship, book reviews, and editorial craft. … The Editorial Practicum is aimed at graduate and early career scholars who are interested in learning more about academic publishing and editing from behind the scenes. It will take place via Zoom most weeks between late September and late November, with two meetings per week: one seminar-style meeting with practicum participants and guests, and our Friday morning editorial meeting.
