ALT Arson Awareness Week. May 5th through May 11th, 2026. The United States Fire Administration reports an estimated 16,800 intentionally set fires in residential buildings each year. These fires result in an estimated 280 deaths, 775 injuries, and $593 million in property loss annually. Teach children that fire is dangerous. Only adults should use matches and lighters. Fire is a tool, not a toy, and must only be used by adults. Even small fires can spread very quickly. If you feel that your child is a higher risk of experimenting with fire, contact your local fire department for help teaching your child about fire safety. Brought to you by the Iowa State Fire Marshal and Fire Safe Iowa.

You used to have seven to eight minutes to leave your home after you heard the smoke alarm. Now, you have 1 or 2 minutes from the time the alarm sounds. Make sure you have properly maintained and fully-functional smoke detectors and evacuation plans.
