Hollywood spent $70 million on two separate reboots over five years to prove what fans already knew: Hellboy without Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman is dead on arrival. Now, Perlman is putting the pressure directly back on the studios. The 76-year-old actor confirmed to Deadline that his standing offer to finish the trilogy with del Toro has no expiration date, even if it takes another decade of prosthetic hell. The unresolved ending of 2008’s The Golden Army remains one of modern cinema’s biggest cliffhangers. Del Toro had mapped out a biblical, Greek-epic finale revolving around Liz Sherman’s unborn twins and Big Red’s prophetic destiny to trigger the apocalypse in order to save mankind. Universal balked at the required $120 million budget back in 2012, shelving the auteur vision to save cash. Instead, studios flushed money down the drain on David Harbour’s disastrous 2019 flop ($44M domestic haul on a $50M budget) and 2024’s straight-to-digital The Crooked Man. When asked if he and del Toro have recently held private talks to finally shoot the trilogy-capper, Perlman delivered a cagey, three-word response: "No comment."
