Still money to be made out there
It's been a LONG time since I last saw a $500+ day on my Mediavine dashboard. Just wanted to celebrate this little win with you guys, so don't judge me 🙏🥹 And yep, I have quite a few sites with Mediavine. They used to make pretty good money, but as you can see, most of them are barely making pennies these days. Facebook now drives a big chunk of traffic across our portfolio, and I really think more publishers should give it a shot. One thing I do every day is use Insight Hive app (the app we're building) to see what's working for other Facebook Pages in our niche. It's honestly been super helpful for finding content ideas and figuring out what gets engagement. If you're curious, give it a try. There's a free plan where you can check any public Facebook Page and see which posts are performing best. No need to pay just to test it out: insighthive.app/free-tools/f… And Pinterest... seriously, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO US?! 😭

If you are planning for building sites mainly targeting display ads, must read this out first: [The "write great answers, rank on Google, monetize with ads" model is mostly dead for informational content. If an AI can summarize it, it will, and consumers will use that solution because it's lower friction. Lower friction almost always wins regardless of any moral argument] Huge respect for @KevinEspiritu
It's the end of an era at Epic Gardening... In the early days, Epic was a WordPress blog. I built it as a "digital resume" for the website design work I was doing at the time and chronicled some of my experiments growing plants in hydroponic systems... This was 2013. I learned that blogs could make a bit of cash, and dove headfirst into the world of blogging, SEO, and blog monetization. A few articles turned into thousands, mostly making money off of display ads and affiliate links. Classic blogger stuff.... There were some huge days back then, but nothing as huge as when we launched our shop. I put it on a subdomain, because "the blog was the business, after all." Then two things happened: 1. Product sales became the vast majority of our revenue 2. AI decimated direct traffic to blogs We've lost a massive amount of our organic traffic over the last 3-4 years. Not because the content got worse, but because people don't need or want to click anymore. Someone asks Google or ChatGPT why their tomatoes are splitting and gets an answer stitched together from sites like ours, without ever visiting it (In case you can't tell, I'm still salty about this. Not sure how it's ethical to scrape the entire internet for original content, then serve it as your own and delete a click from the original author, but I digress...) At a certain point there's, no reason to keep giving your best real estate to a blog that no longer pays for itself. So we moved the entire site to the main domain so you can learn AND shop in the same place The "write great answers, rank on Google, monetize with ads" model is mostly dead for informational content. If an AI can summarize it, it will, and consumers will use that solution because it's lower friction. Lower friction almost always wins regardless of any moral argument Kind of bittersweet for me, though. That blog funded everything we've built at Epic Gardening since, and I'm proud of it, but times change!

God, I never know Bing and other small engines can generate this much traffic! Any more insights that I can learn from, guys? 😉

I may be whining lately about failing at so many things, but I like to share some of the real struggle. Gurus make it seems like everyone is making six figures per month, driving a lambo, and working 3 hours per day. I'm too honest to pretend I'm doing that.

But they’re now letting me run ads to my blocked domain… A domain they blocked for breaking their spam policies but it’s ok if I pay to share my “spammy” site, right?
Pinterest support reaching new lows today. Thanks for all the help 🥴

If you're seeing RPMs drop for the 17th Sep, this might have something to do with it: ads.google.com/status/publis…
Anyone else seeing RPMs drop yesterday? Known reporting issues?

It can't get any worse, right? RIGHT?
And this is why people say Pinterest is dead. No strategy change. 2-year-old account. Dead overnight 💀

Hooray! One of our CM pages is finally back on track, around 10 days earlier than expected. I honestly don’t know why 😅 The end date for the restriction was showing around mid-September, but somehow the page came back early. This is the FB CM page I run together with my friend @IntrovertGeekUK. So at least from this case, the Inauthentic Engagement flag doesn’t seem to be permanent. Now the big question is whether Meta will still pay out the earnings from before the restriction. We’re waiting to see. I still have another CM page with the same flag, and that one is supposed to end around mid-September too. Fingers crossed. 🤞 How are your CM pages doing? Anyone else getting theirs back?
