ALT 1. Radial Ice Measurement This method is used for round objects, like small tree branches. Step 1: Use a ruler to measure the width of ice on each side of an ice-covered object (a small branch is often easiest). Step 2: Add the two values together and divide by two to get the average. Visual Example: An accompanying photo shows a hand holding a clear ruler against an icy branch. Yellow markings indicate a measurement of 5/16" on one side and 3/16" on the other, resulting in a radial average of 1/4". 2. Flat Ice Measurement This method is used for horizontal, elevated surfaces. Step 1: Find a flat elevated surface that is ice-covered. Step 2: Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the ice. Visual Example: A photo shows a ruler measuring a layer of ice on top of a flat black post, indicating a thickness of 1/2".
