In its eight years of service, the FJ-3 Fury made its mark as a Navy fighter jet. For three of those years, 1955 to 1958, it served aboard Intrepid. Compact but powerful, the Fury was designed for carrier operations and armed with four 20mm autocannons, robust landing gear and extra fuel tanks.

While working in Intrepid's hot engine rooms and fire rooms, crew members would often huddle under downcomers (large pipes that provided ventilation) in order to escape the heat. Felipe “Phil” Cervantes recalls that crew members often grew close in these situations, sharing many conversations, and even songs. #HispanicHeritageMonth

.@NY_Comic_Con is here, so we’re taking a look at some of the art created aboard Intrepid! Artist Ed Ritter served on Intrepid in 1944. He flew F6F Hellcats with Fighting Squadron 18 (VF-18). Between missions, Ritter entertained himself and his shipmates with cartoons about squadron life. #NYCC

6️⃣0️⃣ years ago today, Intrepid pilot Tom Patton shot down a MiG-17 fighter jet flown by the North Vietnamese Army. Patton was flying a propeller-driven A-1 Skyraider. This was one of only two confirmed shoot-downs of a MiG by a Skyraider. Visit the Intrepid Museum's flight deck to see a Skyraider and a MiG-17. Then see "On the Line: Intrepid and the Vietnam War" to hear stories from Tom Patton and other Intrepid pilots.

We are saddened by the passing of pioneering software developer Margaret Hamilton. Hamilton was the first woman hired to write software for NASA’s Apollo missions. Credited with popularizing the term “software engineering,” she was instrumental in guiding the Apollo missions and led the team that programmed the computers that took humans to the Moon. We were proud to honor Margaret with the Intrepid Lifetime Achievement Award at our 2019 Salute to Freedom gala. Her indelible mark on space, computer science and women in STEM will forever be remembered. Photos courtesy of Erika Kapin Photography and Rob Tannenbaum Photography

What does it take to protect a piece of history? Bill Daack’s diary offers a glimpse into life aboard Growler. With no regular mail aboard the submarine, he used his journal to write long-form letters to his wife. His diary is housed in a custom-made phase box, built to its exact measurements to help preserve his story for generations to come.
