New in @NatureNeuro: We developed a flexible model that reveals how animals learn tasks—uncovering stages, sudden insights, and gradual improvements unique to each animal.
Learning isn't monotonic, and our model captures that complexity 🐭📊

Happy to share that our new paper is out in Nature Communications with Zoe Ashwood, @IntlBrainLab, and @jpillowtime!
We study how animals switch between internal decision-making states in non-stationary environments using a GLM-HMM framework.

Thrilled to share our state-of-the-art method for in vivo cell-type classification and brain region localization, NEMO, which is now now a spotlight at #ICLR2025!
We use NEMO to characterize the electrophysiological diversity of cell-types across the entire mouse brain. 🐭 🧠

Another step toward a foundation model of the mouse brain: "Neural Encoding and Decoding at Scale (NEDS)"
Trained on neural and behavioral data from 70+ mice, NEDS achieves state-of-the-art prediction of behavior (decoding) and neural responses (encoding) on held-out animals.

Now officially accepted as a poster at NeurIPS 2024! – at Wisconsin, USA
What will a foundation model for the brain look like?
We argue that it must be able to solve a diverse set of tasks across multiple brain regions and animals.
Check out our preprint where we introduce a multi-region, multi-animal, multi-task model (MtM): arxiv.org/abs/2407.14668

Neural activity is correlated among animals performing the same task and across sequential trials.
Led by @zhang_yizi and @hl3616, we develop an reduced-rank model that exploits shared structure across animals to improve neural decoding.

Lightning Pose is an efficient pose estimation approach that requires few labeled training data owing to its semi-supervised learning strategy and ensembling.

I found the main bug and fixed it (see new releases). This affects versions 2.5 and 3. Thanks to the @IntlBrainLab for finding this problem.
Good time to upgrade to Kilosort4 :) ? The #pytorch implementation should be immune from such issues. #kilosort github.com/MouseLand/Kilosor…
There's a bug in Kilosort 🚨 The @IntlBrainLab found spike holes: every 2s no spikes are detected for 7 ms. Although it's a small fraction of data (0.3%), it's good to be aware of this issue. Also consider rerunning spike sorting after it's been resolved.

Working with this massive dataset can be daunting. I made this notebook to help you:
- Query recordings from a certain brain region (or multiple simultaneously recorded regions)
- Load in the neural activity
- Align the data to task events
- Plot PSTHs

I am beyond excited to present the first preview of the Brain Wide Map dataset at the #Neuropixels Symposium at #SfN22. We will dive deep into 194 brain areas of mice making decisions, although we will only scratch the surface of this enormous dataset. Wed Nov 16, 2:55pm, SDCC 6B

Interesting discussion on neurophysiology data standards going on. Here are some thoughts. What follows is not a criticism of the NWB format, which has hugely benefitted our field. As part of the team that designed NWB1.0, I can even share some credit for it.+

New @IntlBrainLab analysis shows that decisions are NOT stationary over the course of an experimental session. Sometimes decision-makers focus on evidence & ignore irrelevant info😃. Other times irrelevant info & superstitions dominate😭. As usual, very similar in mice & humans.
Mouse and human #decision-making relies on an interplay among multiple interleaved strategies, which often switch multiple times within a session
New from @zoe_ashwood, @jpillowtime , @theiStone , @IntlBrainLab, @anne_churchland, and @pouget_alex
