I was invited to participate in the Side Event organized by the @ICJ_org, @cfjusticeorg , @LCWNGO and @Intersectionuno . The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights also contributed to the discussion. The event highlighted the challenges and risks faced by human rights defenders across North Africa, including:
⚖️ Arbitrary and unfounded prosecutions
🚫 Restrictions on the right to freedom of association
🤐 Repression of the rights to freedom of expression and association
👁️ Surveillance and criminalization of human rights work
I hope to visit the region in the near future to engage directly with civil society organizations and gain a deeper understanding of their challenges, needs, and aspirations. Such engagement would provide an important opportunity to foster dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including State authorities, on concrete measures to ensure that human rights defenders are able to operate in a safe and enabling environment.
States must comply with their international human rights obligations.

The event will provide insights into the approaches taken to protect HRDs across the region, with analysis of the latest ACHPR country reviews of Egypt and Tunisia. The event will also provide the opportunity for participants to hear from the ACHPR Commissioner assigned as country rapporteur on Libya and Tunisia, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, regarding their reflections on the HRDs’ situation in these countries and their priorities for 2026 and beyond.

🗺️ Arbitrary long-term detention has become one of the cruelest tools to silence human rights defenders. Around the world, women and men who protect communities, land, and freedoms are jailed on fabricated charges, after unfair trials and under abusive conditions – sometimes paying with their lives.
In 2024 alone, the #SOSDefenders platform documented 93 new cases of arbitrary detention of human rights defenders in 11 countries, while @OBS_defenders (OMCT–FIDH) continues to record cases from Nicaragua to Togo, Thailand, Morocco, Belarus and beyond. This climate of fear is meant to dismantle civil society and punish those who dare to defend rights.
⛓️💥 Today, regional and international human rights mechanisms and mandate holders urge all States to end this practice and immediately release all detained human rights defenders.

The organizations signed this statement condemning the decision by the Supreme Council for Media Regulation on September 8 to deny a license to the “@fakartaany” website. This decision is part of a policy that deprives independent media outlets of their right to a license, exposing them to legal threats within a broader framework of restricting #MediaFreedom and the right to access information. The organizations call on the Supreme Council for Media Regulation to accept the petition submitted by “Free Think Media,” the parent company of “Fakar Tany,” on October 20.
