The Future of Web3 Business Models: Delivering Real Value Beyond Tokenization Lately, I’ve been vocal about a critical shift Web3 needs to make: moving away from the tokenization of everything mindset. The obsession with turning every asset into a tradable token has drowned out a more pressing conversation - what value are we actually delivering to users in this decentralized era? In this article, I want to explore what the future of Web3 business models should look like - how we can harness blockchain’s unique properties like trustlessness, immutability, transparency, and programmability to create systems that solve real problems and generate revenue without relying on token mania. The Token Trap and the Value Imperative Tokenization has been Web3’s go-to play - NFTs for art, tokens for governance, tokens for culture… we’ve seen it all. It’s seductive because it’s simple: digitize an asset, slap a token on it, and let the market do the rest. But as we’ve seen, this approach often leads to bubbles that burst, leaving users with little more than digital receipts. The problem isn’t tokens themselves; it’s that they’ve become the endgame instead of a tool. If Web3 is going to thrive, we need to focus on building systems that leverage blockchain’s strengths to deliver tangible benefits - systems people will pay for because they offer tangible value, not because they’re trending on X. Blockchains offers a unique toolkit that separates it from Web2: trustlessness eliminates intermediaries, immutability ensures unchangeable records, transparency builds confidence, and programmability automates complex processes. These aren’t just buzzwords - they’re the foundation for disrupting industries and creating value. Let’s look at some real-world examples and unpack how they could translate into viable business models. Real-World Examples of Web3 Value Creation (side note: I have intentionally chosen to discuss extremely high-level applications to remind my audience the extent to which Blockchain applications may be useful). Healthcare: Securing Patient Data Imagine a healthcare system where patient records are stored on a blockchain - immutable, secure, and accessible only to authorized parties. No more worrying about tampered medical histories or unauthorized access. Trustlessness ensures patients and providers can interact without a central gatekeeper, while immutability guarantees data integrity. A business model here could involve hospitals or clinics paying a subscription fee to access this secure infrastructure, or patients paying small fees for portable, blockchain-verified records they control. The value? Privacy, security, and trust in a sector where those are non-negotiable. Agriculture: Fair Trade and Livestock Tracking In agriculture, blockchains can tackle two pressing needs: ethical sourcing and food safety. For fair trade cooperatives, a transparent, immutable ledger could track farmer deliveries - quantity, quality, and farming practices - ensuring accurate payments and authentic certifications. Consumers could scan a QR code on their coffee or cocoa to verify its journey, with cooperatives charging brands a fee to join this trusted network. The transparency improves Consumer confidence, the immutability gives Brands a layer of accountability to their purchasing practices. Similarly, a livestock tracking system could store health records for cattle, goats, or poultry on-chain. Only disease-free animals enter the market, and if an outbreak occurs, the source is traceable in minutes. Meat producers could pay per record to certify their supply, or governments could fund it as a public health measure. The value lies in accountability and safety - blockchain makes it possible, and the revenue follows the utility. Property Records: Fraud-Proof Land Registries Land disputes and fraudulent titles plague property markets worldwide. A blockchain-based registry could use immutability to lock in ownership records, transparency to make them publicly verifiable, and programmability to automate transfers via smart contracts. Governments could charge a small fee per transaction to maintain the system, or private firms could offer premium services like title insurance built on this infrastructure. The value is clear: reduced fraud, faster transfers, and trust in a notoriously opaque industry. This could apply to even property rights for things such as: a vehicle registry, a boat registry (shout out to @mustaa_io) and others. Monetizing Web3: Business Models That Work These examples highlight blockchain’s potential to disrupt industries, but disruption alone isn’t enough - businesses need to make money. The good news? Web3 doesn’t need to reinvent monetization; it can adapt proven models to its decentralized framework. Here’s how: Subscription Fees: Healthcare providers subscribe to a blockchain records platform; cooperatives charge brands to join a fair trade network. Recurring revenue aligns with ongoing value delivery. Transaction Fees: A small cut per livestock certification or property transfer keeps the system running while scaling with usage. Service Licensing: Private companies license blockchain infrastructure to governments or industries, customizing it for specific needs (e.g., land registries with local compliance). Freemium Models: Basic access to a fair trade system is free, with premium features (analytics, integrations) behind a paywall. Tokens can still fit in - say, as governance tools for cooperatives or incentives for early adopters - but they’re not the backbone. The revenue comes from the service, not the speculation. Challenges and Opportunities Of course, this vision isn’t without hurdles. Adoption requires educating industries stuck in Web2 mindsets. Scalability and privacy concerns still loom over blockchain tech. And regulatory uncertainty could slow progress. But these are solvable problems - and the opportunities outweigh them. Healthcare could save billions in data breaches. Agriculture could empower small farmers and protect consumers. Property markets could unlock economic potential in developing nations. Web3 business models that tap into these needs will find both users and profits. The Path Forward The future of Web3 business models isn’t about tokenizing more stuff – it’s about solving more problems. By leaning into blockchain’s core strengths – trustlessness, immutability, transparency, and programmability – we can build systems that deliver real value to society, from secure medical records to fraud-proof property ownership. Monetization doesn’t need to be a mystery; it can flow naturally from the utility provided, whether through fees, subscriptions, or partnerships. We’ve spent too long chasing the next big token drop. It’s time to chase the next big solution instead.

It's still a mystery to me how supposedly decentralized blockchains can shut down. 😄 With @lukso_io it needs only a few people to keep it running and it would continue forever, as is the true Ethereum L1 stack but for culture. (In fact we ourselves run NO validators of the network) If you believe in a web3 for social and culture then I invite the abstract community to join LUKSO. Our community is building that future and it’s the real decentralized and grass roots version of it. Download the Universal Profile app on the app/play store and try @hupsocial, @momentsonchain and other apps. And soon also use it as the web3 browser for all popular EVM chains too. And explore with a 🆙 rather than a simple wallet.

Glad to share Cross Chain LSP. Your LUKSO Universal Profile can now live on other EVM networks, like Base, Polygon, Avalanche or Arbitrum, at exactly the same address. 🚀

Tunnel is live. 🌀 Tunnel is a private chat app that keeps everything onchain: your messages, your contacts, your social reactions, your profile, even which chats you pinned. It runs on Base, and it works with your LUKSO Universal Profile. tunnelapp.chat ■ End-to-end encrypted Every message, photo and voice note is encrypted in your browser before it leaves your device. IPFS stores only the ciphertext, and the chain stores only a pointer to it. Only you and the person you're talking to can read it. Not us, and not the relayer that sends it. ■ No gas, no popups, no sign-up No email and no phone number. Pick a 4-digit passcode and the app creates a wallet for you right in your browser. We pay the network fee for every chat action, so you never see a wallet popup or need to buy gas to say hi. ■ Everything onchain There's no Tunnel database. There's no Indexer. Your account lives on Base: • Messages: sending, editing, deleting and reacting are all transactions. Tap View Transaction on any message to open it in the explorer. A hollow circle means the relay has your message, and a filled one means it's onchain. • Contacts: your contact list is saved onchain, encrypted. That includes the name and picture you save for someone, plus their phone numbers, emails, company, birthday and notes. • Pin, favorite and mute: each is saved in that encrypted list, so a chat you pin on your phone is pinned on your laptop too. • Block: the people you block are kept in the same encrypted list. • Message requests: people you haven't added can still reach you. Their request goes onchain sealed, so only you can open it and see who it's from. It lands in Requests. • Profile: your name, bio and picture are onchain and public, the way a profile should be. • Chat key: published once, with proof it's yours, so anyone can start an encrypted chat with you from your address. ■ Private by design Your wallet appears onchain only once, to publish your chat key. After that, each conversation is sent from its own key, derived from your private vault. Onchain, your chats look unrelated to each other and to your wallet. Your contact list is saved under yet another key, so it isn't tied to your wallet either. ■ Chat the way you're used to Photos (paste them in or take one with the camera), voice messages, GIFs, emoji, reactions, replies, forwarding, message search and a media gallery for every chat. Filter your inbox by Unread, Direct, Favorites and Requests. Choose light, dark or system, and pick a wallpaper, Base included. ■ Rooms Rooms are public chats anyone can read. Posts, edits, reactions and moderation all happen onchain, in a contract separate from your private chats, so posting in a Room never reveals which private conversations you're in. A Room can be open to everyone, members-only or moderators-only, with an optional slow mode. Moderators can hide posts and mute spammers. ■ Bring your LUKSO Universal Profile Tunnel runs on Base for low fees and fast blocks. In the app, your Universal Profile is called a smart account. Choose "Continue with smart account", sign one message, and your Universal Profile's name and picture show on every message you send. Linking needs no transaction and no gas. It gives Tunnel no control over your Universal Profile, and nothing it holds can be moved. The link is checked live, so if you remove the controller that signed it, the link disappears. Your name and picture stay on your Universal Profile: edit them there and Tunnel shows the change. ■ Money in the chat Pay the person you're talking to without leaving the conversation. Transfers go peer to peer, straight from your wallet to theirs, and Tunnel never holds your funds. Send USDC or native coins on 10 networks: Arc, Base, Ethereum, Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, Unichain, BNB Chain, Celo, Monad and LUKSO. Arc comes first: USDC is Arc's own coin, so the fee is paid in USDC too, with no second token to buy. You have one address on every network, and Receive shows it as a QR code. Transfers pay their own network fee. Free gas is for chat. ■ Yours on every device One recovery key restores your account, contacts and chat history on any device. You can also link a new phone by scanning a code from one you're signed in on. You can keep several accounts on one device and switch between them in Settings. Add Tunnel to your home screen and it runs like an app. ■ What's public Onchain means public, so here's what anyone can see: that a wallet registered a chat key and when, and, for each conversation, when messages were sent, how many there are and how big they are. Editing or deleting hides a message in the app, but the encrypted original stays in chain history. What you say, who is in your contacts, and which wallet is behind which chat stay private. ■ Day one Message a friend, open a Room, link your Universal Profile, and tell us what breaks. tunnelapp.chat @tunnelchat @ERC725Account @base @buildonbase @baseposting @lukso_io

The thing is, once you’ve spent some time using a Universal Profile, it becomes really hard to go back to something like MetaMask, or any other EOA wallet, for that matter. Everything else starts to feel kind of bare-bones in comparison I want to manage all of my on-chain activity (social, agents, …) and assets (non-economic and hodling/DeFi/loans/swing) through my UP Period. Are we ready for a multichain NFT launchpad? Ethereum · Robinhood · LUKSO · BNB · Monad · Arbitrum · Base · Celo Not another mint site. From the composer you deploy a collection you actually own — ERC721/ERC1155, or LSP7/LSP8 on LUKSO — editions or numbered, your supply, your price, your gate: open, allowlist, followers only, holders of another asset, or your community. Then the mint button lives inside the post. Where your people already are. Eight mainnets. One composer. Drops is coming. Which chain should we open first? 👇 Creator: 0x20e229667Cec8A0e9D3C6Fb89693B2a44ec2C50e hup.social/networks/42/4666 via @hupsocial

I’ve changed how I think about building on LUKSO. For years I’ve wondered why more of crypto doesn’t seem to care about what’s being built here. Smart contract accounts. Account abstraction. Onchain identity. Permissioning. Social graphs. Digital assets. Extensible profiles. All built as interoperable standards, with identity at the core. A lot of the things crypto is getting excited about today have existed on LUKSO in some form for years. And yet, outside the LUKSO bubble, almost nobody seems to care. Maybe they’ve never heard of it. Maybe they looked once and dismissed it. Either way, trying to pull the existing crypto crowd over hasn’t worked. And I’m increasingly convinced that chasing them is the wrong goal anyway. Crypto today is overwhelmingly driven by financial speculation. Memecoins. Trading. Points. Airdrops. Yield. If LUKSO wants that audience, it probably needs significantly more liquidity. Degens go where there are things to trade and money to be made. But that audience is tiny compared with the rest of the world. Most people aren’t degens. They don’t want to bridge funds, manage wallets, sign transactions, understand gas, speculate on tokens or care what chain something runs on. They want products that are useful, fun, social, creative or meaningful. So that’s increasingly where my focus is. I want to build products on LUKSO that benefit from blockchain — ownership, identity, portability, programmability, decentralisation — while abstracting the blockchain itself almost completely. The user shouldn’t need to care that it’s a dApp. They should just care that it’s a good product. I think that’s where LUKSO gets much more interesting.

The US is so insanely screwed right now. Oil price suppression is going to backfire and that SPR drain is going to light the financial markets on fire.🔥🔥 Houthi’s lighting up Saudi tankers. That’s 12% of world oil that stuck. + the 20% in the SoH + China having to comeback into the market means we’re in for an oil shock. You have to be long oil, long refineries, and really short the US Nasdaq and markets. Add this to the US running blind out of the ME with radars destroyed, and the bases now vulnerable to Iranian strikes. This War is going so badly for the US it’s borderline hilarious if it wasn’t so globally destructive . Trump has no choice but to back out (that will turn the markets around). But the only way he survives is to accept Iranian control over the SoH and the US being ran out of the ME.
Rubio publicly pleading with the Houthis like this, saying he hopes they'll stop and saying they'll cause problems for China (as if that isn't a goal of this administration), is really something. It reflects a remarkable level of desperation.
