CALVERTON, MD. (October 8, 2026) —  The Intermodal Association of North America today released the latest reading of its Intermodal Volume Index, a measure of North American intermodal freight activity. The October 2026 estimate of 105.1 is a predicted 0.3 percent decline from September but a 5.5 percent increase from the year prior, underlining the strength of this year’s intermodal volumes. "We are expecting October to look remarkably similar to September, extending the peak season demand into the first part of Q4," said Andrew Sibold, Director of Economics. "A word of caution: with strong domestic share shifting from trucking and imports rebounding, there is the potential for capacity to tighten which would dampen the actual results." Against a 2017–19 baseline set to 100, IANA gauges what is happening right now — before the official monthly figures are published. It works by translating a high-frequency freight activity onto the same scale as the published index, giving shippers, carriers and analysts an early snapshot of current-month demand. IANA President and CEO Anne Reinke previously stated: “We appreciate the Administration’s commitment to providing leadership at the Department of Labor. Among the Department’s most pressing priorities is finalizing the proposed rule that would preserve the ability of independent contractors to remain self-employed. This rulemaking is particularly important to the intermodal freight industry, as approximately 80 percent of drayage drivers have chosen to be independent contractors because it offers the flexibility to select their hours and routes. Surveys of these drivers consistently show that mandatory reclassification would prompt most independent drayage drivers to leave the trucking industry, resulting in significant capacity concerns. We urge the Department of Labor to finalize this rule and protect the men and women who keep America’s supply chains moving.” IANA looks forward to working with Secretary Sonderling and Department leadership to advance policies that protect workers while preserving legitimate opportunities for owner-operators, whose flexibility and capacity remain essential to the intermodal freight network. #intermodal #transportation #keithsonderling
