Marcus Townend Fundraiser
About Marcus
After time with local newspapers and the Sporting Life, he worked for the Daily Mail for 35 years, graduating to becoming its racing editor and correspondent – a diligent, principled, talented and tenacious journalist.
Marcus's accident
It is nearly a year since Marcus fell off his bike and suffered the first of three bleeds in his brain. Three months later, he had gradually recovered well enough from the first two to spend a month at home. The third bleed, which occurred at the end of March, following a plate insertion to repair his skull, proved the most damaging, from which he is still recuperating. Too late, he was finally diagnosed in July to have mild haemophilia. Despite his amazing determination to communicate clearly, self care and mobilise, he will require ongoing neurophysiotherapy and much care from others to achieve his independent potential.
How you can help?
This year's HWPA Derby Awards Lunch (Monday 7th December) will be combined with a fundraiser for Marcus..

William Haggas to the press, with @Shadwell_EU Angus Gold listening in, after Almeraq's G1 @Qatar_Racing British Champions Sprint win @ascot
WH: "To win three G1s with him is fantastic, and to hopefully produce another stallion for Shadwell is also very important."
Press: "Any indication about next year?"
WH: "Well, I haven't asked the question because I'm frightened I'll know the answer!"
AG (chuckling): "We wanted to get through today. He's the best sprinter around, and as I said to sales day live @Tattersalls1766 he's a valuable horse for us going forward at stud. I'd be surprised if he's still in training next year!
"He's been a superstar. It would be wonderful to run him again if we could, but we don't breed many like him, but he's proved he's the best around and we'd rather like him at the stud.
"He has shown his versatility to win here against the best in June, @haydockraces he looked very good, and today he had work to do it, but showed his class and great mind."

Night In Vegas cost 60,000gns – the @KennetValleySyn members put in £9,900 each to include all costs for Year 1 #whatadeal
🎤 @johnsonhoughton: "He was stuck behind a wall of horses there who weren't as good as him, but luckily he is like a motorbike, isn't he? He has run eight times, won six, finished 2nd in the Richmond Stakes (G2) & fifth in the Coventry Stakes (G2) @Ascot"

Darkness Falls is the first by @coolmorestud's Camelot to win two Group 1 races as a 2yo.
He is out of the No Nay Never mare You'resobeautiful, a daughter of the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Hula Angel (Woodman).
You'resobeautiful has had 2x wnrs from 2x rnrs – in addition to Darkness Falls she has produced The Flying Seagull (2022, Kodiac), winner of one race as a 2yo.
The mare's visit to Kodiac is the only time she has seen a stallion other than Camelot, and she had colts by the son of Montjeu in 2025 and 2026 and is due to him in 2027.
"It was a big call to come here, to bring a horse back from 9f to the Dewhurst. We always thought he had a lot of class," said Aidan O'Brien after the win.
"He's going to have no problem getting further next year. He has a lot of quality. When they have that much class, they can do anything really."
No horse since Nijinsky in 1970 has won the 2,000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger in the same season. Camelot, winner of the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby in 2012, finished second in the St Leger.
When asked if the colt could become a Triple Crown hopeful, O'Brien said: "If everything goes well we'll start in the Guineas and see what will happen after that."
Didn't win, but a mighty fine second for the Stradivarius colt Wykehurst Park in the G3 Zetland Stakes @NewmarketRace
The @NatStudStallion's first-season sire has now had ten runners, two winners, one placed runner and a G3 second.
The colt is an exciting prospect for next year, says @AndrewBalding2
Bred by Saxtead Livestock Ltd, Wykehurst Park sold for 25,000gns as a foal, and 62,000gns as a yearling
