The notion of ‘jury equity’, ‘jury nullification’ & ‘perverse acquittals’ has become a hot topic of late. In this op-ed, Garden Court North’s Pete Weatherby KC and Mira Hammad argue these are all terms for the power of jurors to act on their conscience.

🚨The 'Britain’s Political Prisoners' Report documents the UK’s descent into authoritarianism
The report reveals how the indiscriminate use of remand, private injunctions, contempt of court proceedings and increasingly long prison sentences are being used against climate and anti-war protesters.

One day, your life and future may depend on a jury. The integrity of that legal process is in peril right now.
When a barrister is cited for contempt because of his argument to a jury, as happened in a Palestine Action trial, the risks affect us all

Pete Weatherby KC of @gcnchambers is chairing the event – his opening remarks: "For the first time ever in this jurisdiction a lawyer is facing criminal trial for what he said in his closing speech to a jury. Wholly unprecedented here, but in my experience not uncommon in certain other jurisdictions, authoritarian ones, as I will mention in a moment. It represents a very dark turn for the rule of law here"

Alex Grace’s first feature film, ‘Operation Recomply’, is a powerful documentary exploring the families and friends affected by the UK state’s response to direct action targeting Israel’s Elbit Systems weapons manufacturing company.
After premiering to a packed audience at London’s Genesis Cinema, the film was later screened in Parliament at the invitation of John McDonnell MP. Speaking after the screening, McDonnell spoke of his intention to invite Filton activists, families and friends to further events within Parliament “as a point of principle” because “this is where the evil started”.
Our verdict: “HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – GO SEE IT.”
