When IBR volunteer Scott Barker rescued a struggling Common Murre while surfing in Ventura, he did more than save one bird. His viral Instagram video reached hundreds of thousands, raising awareness of the ongoing starvation crisis affecting murres.

A hook, a line, and one lucky little grebe.
This young Pied-billed Grebe arrived with fishing line and a hook lodged inside its digestive tract, a life-threatening injury for such a small bird. Our team removed both without surgery, giving this resilient patient a second chance.

Common Murres were one of the species affected by a CA starvation event that occurred earlier this year, and this may be occurring again. Since August 15, we've received 68 murres, with most showing signs of worn, broken, excessively weathered feathers.
birdrescue.org/uptick-in-sta…
Seabirds rely on healthy feathers to stay warm, waterproof, buoyant, and able to swim and fly. But when food is scarce, they may not have enough energy to replace worn feathers during their annual molt, and if not replaced on time, they can have problems surviving.
Get inspired by the people behind the work. 💚

The choices we make can shape whether species have the space, resources, and conditions they need to survive and thrive.
This #NationalWildlifeDay, take a moment to consider what you can do to make the world a little safer for the wildlife sharing it with us.
