NYT deal book reported that Precision Series D closed at just over $1B! This wasn't in the company release yesterday. How many BCI unicorns are there now? My count sits at 2 confirmed plus 7 near or likely, across the US and China. Confirmed: Neuralink ~$9B Precision ~$1B (per NYT) Near / likely: Science Corp Synchron Merge Labs ($850M seed val) Paradromics BrainCo (China) Neuracle (China) StairMed (China)

A new milestone for brain-computer interfaces: For the first time, participants without paralysis are controlling computers, playing video games, and operating digital devices using a brain-computer interface that records from the brain’s surface rather than penetrating it. On #NationalDoctorsDay, @PrecisionNeuro_ would like to express deep gratitude for the #Physicians who have dedicated their lives to the care of others, and especially those living with severe #NeurologicalConditions. Your work goes far beyond medicine. It requires patience, resilience, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to your patients and their families—often through long, complex, and emotionally demanding journeys. To the #Neurologists, #RehabilitationSpecialists, #Neurosurgeons, and all #HealthcareProfessionals in this space: thank you for your compassion, your expertise, and your relentless pursuit of better outcomes. #Gratitude #HealthcareHeroes #PatientCare #DoctorsDay #ThankYouDoctors #AIinHealthcare

The likely and realistic path (based on Meta’s business model): Meta is THE company that turned “scrolling” into a global addiction. Now they have a better model of the brain’s reward circuitry than their users do. Predicting how a user's brain will respond to stimuli is basically the nuclear version of engagement optimization. It’s pre-cognitive targeting. Once they feed this into recommendation systems and users will get content that triggers their visual, auditory and associative cortices before they are consciously aware they want it. Meta's history suggests they’ll likely ship this it into reels / instagram / facebook first. Meta are the ones with the distribution and the incentive structure to weaponize it fastest. The open source model however, buys us time for the rest of the ecosystem (academia, other labs, BCI companies, regulators) to catch up and work on their own implementation.

Neuralink has stayed true to its goals claimed during the June 2025 $650 million raise (Blindsight, and today’s release on Voice). The most exciting part however, is still ahead: ‘A WHOLE BRAIN INTERFACE’ to unlock new dimensions of human potential. A future now unimaginable by many, but eventually accepted by most.
Replying to @neuralink
As a part of the $650m raise, Neuralink is pursuing new BCI applications beyond paralysis (vision restoration code-named “Blindsight” and for speech) - but THE MOST exciting part of the recent raise announcement is the plans to progress towards a 'whole-brain interface'.

Big news from Synchron @synchroninc that has barely been reported outside Australian media. The company is returning to Melbourne next month for the first-ever trial of its next-generation Stentrode brain implant. The FOCUS-AU study will enrol 10 MND patients across three hospitals: Royal Melbourne, Alfred, and Liverpool in Sydney. The new device no longer needs an external module and can recognise 16 commands, up from just 2 in the original. Patients will be able to wake, unlock and send messages on an iPhone using thought alone (powered by @Apple's new BCI input protocol). Synchron remains the only company in the world to have implanted a brain-computer interface via blood vessels (no craniotomy / no open brain surgery). Full story on @InsideBCI

Max Hodak (@maxhodak_) is the co-founder of Neuralink and founder of @ScienceCorp_, a company building brain-computer interfaces that can restore sight. Science has developed a tiny retinal implant that stimulates cells in the eye to help blind patients see again. More than 40 patients have already received the treatment in clinical trials, including one who recently read a full novel for the first time in over a decade. In this episode of How to Build the Future, Max joined @garrytan to discuss how BCIs work, what it takes to engineer the brain, and why brain-computer interfaces may become one of the most important technologies of the next decade. 00:26 — The retinal chip helping blind patients see 01:51 — What brain-computer interfaces really are 03:37 — Could BCIs enhance intelligence? 05:44 — The brain’s incredible plasticity 09:23 — What it feels like to see with an implant 13:01 — Can we restore full human vision? 17:55 — Is the brain basically a computer? 24:59 — Max Hodak’s path into brain tech 28:57 — How Neuralink actually started 33:10 — How the brain represents information 39:47 — Bio-hybrid brain interfaces 44:32 — Building the company Science 51:27 — The future of BCIs and human longevity

Biocomputing is an underrated field. The brain is incredibly efficient at computing - up to 1 MILLION times more than silicon. Brain computer interfaces are the most important bridge between human and machine being developed now

.@maxhodak_ gives a fascinating explanation for why restoring smell with brain implants is much harder than fixing vision or hearing: Vision and audio are straightforward to digitize. We can already encode images as pixels and store audio as WAV files. But smell-o-vision would be far tougher to figure out. For years, companies have tried to create chemical detectors by growing neurons that express olfactory receptors - basically attempting to replicate a dog's nose, which are "some of the most sensitive chemical detectors in the universe." When dogs are trained to detect cancer, they're not picking up a single "cancer chemical." There are thousands of chemicals constantly leaking from your blood, and dogs learn to notice irregularities. The problem is you can't just mass spec smell. Smell is made up of thousands of compounds at once - and we still don’t have a file format for representing that complexity.
