Wow, wow, wow. I just left the National Press Club where Minister of Communications @AnikaWells spoke. She repeatedly and brazenly lied about the fake accounts, claiming they were only for enforcement, even though the legislation says in black and white that the eSafety Commissioner can use them in unlimited ways for "educational" and "promotional" purposes. One big moment came when a Politico reporter got up and said something about how mean people like @PaulineHansonOz were to eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman-Grant. Seriously. A supposed reporter was white-knighting for a government official during the official Q&A. The same reporter had come up to me before Wells' speech and asked if I had criticized Inman-Grant. Who needs government censors when you have Politico? After he asked his question, Wells showed the most emotion, describing online criticism of Inman-Grant as "abuse." She also talked about her own staff's supposed suffering. I kid you not. The mask dropped, and you could see what really upset her: people — including a sitting Senator — criticizing government officials. After gaslighting the audience about fake accounts, Wells repeatedly insisted the government wasn't trying to censor content. She said this after filling her speech with examples of content she claimed harmed people. You couldn't make it up. This legislation is the culmination of decades of progressives equating words with physical violence. Wells cynically compared her legislation to prevent psychological "harm" to various laws that protect people from physical harm, like seat belt laws. BTW, Wells never said what content it was that she thought caused eating disorders. Pictures of skinny women? Dietary advice? Who knows. Nobody asked. Another important moment came when Wells explicitly said Australia would be pursuing censorship alongside other nations, including the UK, France, and Spain—all countries where governments risk losing power to populists. I spoke with Julie Inman-Grant before the speech began and asked about the fake accounts. She insisted they were there just for enforcement, and when I asked why the law allowed them to be used for government propaganda, she said she might write an "enforcement memo," which, of course, would have no impact on the legislation. After her speech, I went up to Wells and asked if she was seriously saying the legislation didn't allow the government to use fake accounts for government propaganda. She refused to answer. A man who said he was from the National Press Club stepped in front of me and said I could interview her afterward. But that wasn't possible because they rushed her out the back to avoid any difficult questions. So there you have it. The pettiest people in Australia are seeking to silence citizens and their political opponents in the name of protecting children. These deeply intolerant and cynical people want to control what you can see and say online. And they're doing it with most of the media's support. Australia has reached a new low in its rapid descent into dogmatism, intolerance, and censorship.
The government today will introduce sweeping censorship that @AlboMP & @AnikaWells lie about. Below she claims the government wants to create a bot army of fake accounts for “research” when the bill clearly intends for them to be used in partisan warfare against fooled citizens.

If you’re Australian, you need to care about this.
Replying to @News24Aust
All they do is lie: — Two years ago they said they wanted to crack down on fake accounts. Now they want to operate an unlimited number of them to wage informational war on the Australian people. And now @AnikaWells is lying about what's in the legislation — @AnikaWells says she needs sweeping censorship powers to protect 14 year old girls from eating disorders, but the government already banned under 16 year olds from using social media — @AlboMP at the UN said he wanted to censor citizens to stop "misinformation" and prevent "polarization." The next day he lied about having said this How in the world could anybody trust anything Albanese and Wells say about anything? RECEIPTS: xitter.cf/shellenberger/status/2…

Been a while since I've seen a move from a publisher this bad. This is Riot's change to League of Legends, and it's going to kill a LOT of content creation. Instead of fixing security vulnerabilities they simply decided to remove a core function the community uses. LOL indeed.

I did say I wasn’t a writer 😂 I’m just happy Halo’s getting so much attention tbh, I might actually start posting more about games and esports again 🌚

I’ve been playing Halo since CE “link-ups” in 2002. My esports career literally started competing in and casting Halo 3, and I genuinely don’t think Australian esports becomes what it did without Halo playing a huge part in those early years. So I’m probably about as emotionally invested in this franchise as you can get, despite recent cynicism. But… 343 have had roughly 15 years and 3 mainline games to figure this out. Halo 4, Halo 5 and Infinite all had their moments, but the overall trajectory of Halo hasn’t exactly been heading back toward its glory days. At some point “give them another chance” just doesn’t cut it anymore. Activision building a new, purpose-built Halo team from the ground up is a massive change, and massive change is probably exactly what Halo needs. Will it work? Who knows. But after the last 15 years, I genuinely don’t understand being terrified of trying something different. At worst, someone else is putting the same nails into the same coffin. At best… maybe we get Halo back.
BREAKING: Activision is officially taking over Halo, Xbox announces “Activision will also be developing the next Halo title, led by a new, purpose-built team that is separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty”

During development of Halo 4, 343 built a section that Josh Holmes described as “a very traditional Halo.” Fans loved it. The studio SCRAPPED it. Calling it “too traditional”. Then let’s not forget the infamous line: “..we hired people who hated Halo..” - Frank O’Connor 🙂
The next Halo game will be made by Activision. Halo Studios is suffering significant layoffs today.

COVID.GOV I still remember vehemently arguing against many people including my colleagues at ESL about this. They went red in the face arguing that there was no way a coronavirus could leak from a coronavirus lab right where the coronavirus pandemic started. 🤪

The left side of politics could easily turn this around, with some common sense policies that don’t burden ordinary Aussies. But they won’t. They could win people back by not vilifying them constantly. But they won’t. They will keep screeching. So they will lose. About time.

I’m having more fun in BF6 than I have in any shooter in years. Granted, I mostly play CQB 😅 but it fills a gap that CoD would usually fill for me. I haven’t touched Blops7 yet and haven’t really felt the need to? Feels like CoD missed this year more than any other?

For Arc Raiders to ride the wave of human sociability all the way to the bank, while also being so contemptuous of the thing that makes us social animals in its own workflow demonstrates a lack of artistic integrity that I find impossible to ignore. Our review: bit.ly/49bVn01

ANZers: what was your favourite esports event you attended that was NOT IEM or Dreamhack and why? Doing some research, would appreciate RTs to collect more results. Ty. For the record, mine was the Crown COD Invitational back in 2016 hosting OG and Millennium. Hype af.

Seriously though. Make a team of the minds that built Halo what it was, and the Champs that mastered it. Give this team free rein to develop the story, art, as well as the sandbox and multiplayer mechanics. It’s a licence to print money and build brand love like never before.
