It’s @TALLADEGA @NASCAR weekend!
I’m taking you along to experience Talladega through my eyes.
The sights, the sounds, the atmosphere, and the excitement of Dega.
Always build good relationships. You never know when they might come back around.
After the O’Reillys race the ADA shuttle was taking me out of the infield to meet my wife at the Hall of Fame parking lot. The driver stopped to ask an Alabama State Trooper how to get there.
The trooper asked if I went to the Alabama School for the Blind. I told him no, but I had taught a class there.
He asked who I knew there, and I mentioned one of my best friends in the blind community who has ties to the school. Turns out, the trooper knew him too!
Next thing I know, he’s stopping traffic so the shuttle could get me to my wife.
It’s a small world. You never know when a connection you’ve made will come full circle.
Here’s a look inside my backpack for race weekend.
I carry Vortex binoculars and a monocular to make the most of my remaining vision, an @insta360 camera to take pictures without missing anything, and a @REradioz scanner so the crew at @MRNRadio can be my eyes.
I buy an infield parking pass so my wife can easily drop me off, and I already know the Talladega garage layout by heart.
My goal is simple: stay safe, stay out of everyone’s way, and enjoy every minute of being at the track.
P4! Nice drive, @J_Allgaier. Enjoyed meeting the fine folks at @RotoRooter. Appreciate your support of JA!
There’s a service called Be My Eyes where volunteers help visually impaired folks by describing what they see.
If this @MRNRadio gig ever goes south for @TheAlexHayden, @ThePostman68, and @DGodfatherMoody, I’d encourage them to sign up.
Those fellas could make watching paint dry sound like a three wide battle for the lead at Talladega.
That Truck race was wild!
One trick I use to stay out of the way is my phone’s telephoto lens. I can zoom in on things I want to see without getting too close or being in anyone’s way.
Here are a few photos I took today to get a better look at the carnage while keeping a safe distance.

Here are a few shots of the 1/64 scale @RotoRooter @JRMotorsports hotrod I took in Waikiki this summer.
I’ve gotten into macro photography to capture details on these little cars I’d never see otherwise. Even this close, some are hard to make out!
Not long until I get to see @J_Allgaier wheel the real thing at Talladega Saturday!
Folks ask how I make traveling solo look so easy. Truth is, it takes work to make it look easy! While waiting for my flight to board, I figured I’d share a few essential travel rules.

ALT Handwritten list titled “Travel Rules: A Visually Impaired Man’s Guide to Surviving Airports & Airplanes.” Ten humorous survival rules about navigating airports, TSA pat-downs, turbulence, traveling with a white cane, asking for help, and staying flexible. Tagline: “Because frequent-flyer miles don’t come with frequent-seeing miles.”

Can’t believe it’s been two years since my friend Mike and I took a Lyft 48 miles southwest of Austin to New Braunfels to see the legendary @robertearlkeen. Two visually impaired guys who can’t drive, with absolutely no idea how we were going to get back to Austin after the show.
What an incredible night. Robert’s photographer put us side stage where we could actually see the show, and we sang “Corpus Christi Bay” and “Feelin’ Good Again” at the top of our lungs.
We had to wait a little while afterward, but somehow we managed to get an Uber all the way back to Austin.
Hard to believe it’s already been two years. What a night!

GTA 6 is close enough that I’ve officially stopped taking unnecessary risks.
Just gotta stay alive until November 19. 😭
This North Georgia “Hillbilly Hippie” is headed to see @CharlesWesleyG for the second time this year tonight in Atlanta. Charles, if you see the blind guy you met in Emigrant, Montana wandering around, please stop and say hello. You’ll definitely see me before I see you!
My only complaint about @CharlesWesleyG tonight? The set was way too short. He absolutely stole the show.
Passing through @CLTairport headed to E. Admittedly, I got turned around and ran smack into a wall. Turns out, that wall had a @Bojangles sign on it.
With a little help from two good folks to find the exact spot of the Bojangles, I’m now sitting here eating chicken and drinking @DrinkCheerwine.
I’ll die on this hill… Bojangles tastes better in the Carolinas than it does anywhere else on God’s green earth.
Don’t ask me why. Some things in life don’t need explaining. They just are.
