The killing of #ShirinAbuAkleh was the biggest threat that Palestinian journalists had received from Israel up to that point. Since then, every time a journalist reads about the targeting and killing of a journalist in Gaza, they perceive it as a direct threat to their safety.

In May 2023, CPJ released a report about the 20 journalists killed by Israeli military fire in 22 years, from 2001 to the publication of the report.
Since the publication of the report, nearly 100 journalists have been killed in Israeli strikes, and the main findings of the report still stand:
–Israel discounts evidence and witness claims
–Israeli forces have failed to respect press insignia
–Israeli officials respond by pushing false narratives
–Journalists are accused of terrorism
–IDF killings undermine independent reporting
–Families of journalists have little recourse inside Israel

At least 92 Palestinian journalists have been killed in the occupied Gaza Strip over the last 6 months, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists no other war has taken so many journalists’ lives in such a short span over the course of the last 30 years.
