1/ How a Tiny Ancient Group Bounced Back from Near-Extinction
Samaritans once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Persecution dropped them to 146 by 1918. Today they number 900. Resilience through high fertility, endogamy, and adaptation as the following will show.
🇺🇸 Clark County, South Dakota (Pop Approx 4k):
- Another South Dakota county this time with a clear Hutterite county level fertility signal:
• Between 2010 and 2024 the under 18 share rose here from 23.7% (876 children) to 29% (1,150)
• Median age fell from 45.7 to 40
• Additionally Census QuickFacts puts the under 5 share at 8.9%
• CBD rose to 17.7 (2020-2024)
• 2010's saw 531 births (rate 14.4)
• 2000's saw 374 Births (rate 9.0)
• And the 1990's saw 509 Births (rate 11.6)
• If current fertility continues throughout the 2020s we will see approx 640 births.
- Hutterite Presence:
• Clark county itself is one of the four Hutterite dense counties in South Dakota, which itself has the largest Hutterite population in the United States. More than 7k Hutterites live in over 60 colonies there.
• In 2010 is was estimated that their share of the county 11.3%. However by the 2020 religion census it was closer to 17% with about 634 Schmiedeleut Hutterites in a county of 3,837.
An entire new colony was founded since 2010 called Silver Lake Colony.
The county now has six colonies.
• Another South Dakota county Faulk has the largest Hutterite share at around 20%, and has a (2020–2024) birth rate of 16.6. Here too the share of under 18's edged upwards narrowly from 23.5% to 24.9%, although it still a very old county with a median age of 42.9.
Other Hutterite heavy counties include Hanson County, McPherson County.

🇺🇸 Hamlin County, South Dakota:
The Apostolic Lutheran (Laestadian) heavy county recorded 579 births compared with only 259 deaths between 2020 and 2024 according to U.S. Census Bureau county estimates via RightDataUSA 2020–2024:
During the 2010's 1,081 births are recorded (estimated) by RightData.
This is up from from 892 in the 2000s and 759 in the 1990s. So we have a clear upward trajectory.
The last full decade was already 1k+ births, and so far this decade the county is on pace to match or beat that if current trends continue.
The crude Birth rate is now about 21–23 Births per 1,000 which is approx double the U.S. rate.
Additionally the county itself is getting younger:
• median age was 36.8 in 2010 and 31.8 in 2024
• Share of under 18's according to the website is 32% (2111) in 2024 compared to 30.6% (1805) in 2010.
(Citypopulation.de and Census QuickFacts give a very slightly younger age profile at 33.0% under 18 (2,174 ) and 10.5% under 5 with 19% under 10.
• Net migration was −284.
Norwegian ancestry runs at about 14% with Finnish at 8.8%.

🇺🇸 Orthodox retention amongst Converts:
• In parishes surveyed, at least 81.8% of converts received five to ten years before the data collection (which was in 2023) were still Orthodox with another 9.2% of unknown status. True figure is therefore quite likely higher.
• Converts received less than five years earlier, at least 94.5% remained Orthodox, with 3.7% unknown.

Sergi's (@Pigrau ) page is full of interesting information and contains interesting posts particularly on Old Colony Mennonites in Latin America and Roman Catholic Latin Mass Chapels and Centres. Being a white South African farmer is, by far, the most dangerous occupation in the world, with a peak rate of 313 murders per 100,000 a year (0.313%).
At that rate, 3,130 per 100,000 (3.13%) would be killed over 10 years, and a constant hazard to age 80 implies about a 22% chance of being murdered.
🇧🇷 Brazilian Presidential election first round: Flávio Bolsonaro finishes ahead of Lula.
(Pre-election polls: Whites favour Flávio, Browns and Blacks favour Lula)
With almost all ballots counted from the October 4 first round, Flávio has finished first at about 47% of valid votes counted (roughly 56.1 million) to the incumbent Lula’s 45% (roughly 53.8 million).
Neither have cleared 50%, so they will go to a runoff on October 25.
- Pre-election polls, from Datafolha (late September)
• Black voters (Pretos) - Lula 55% to Flávio 34%
• Mixed race/Brown voters (Pardos) - Lula 49% to 44%
• White voters (Brancos) Flávio 51% to Lula 40%.
Quaest’s late September runoff poll showed the same patterns with Whites favouring Flávio by smaller margin at 45% to 37%. Again Blacks (47% to 34%) and Browns (46% to 40%) favouring Lula.
• In the Northeast (according to the pre election polls) Lula was the clear favorite at 61% to 30% with the South favouring Flávio 57% to 38%,
• Evangelicals were also found to strongly favour Flávio 58% to 34%.
Women leaned Lula in the polls (51% to 41%)

🇷🇺 A new Old Believer Temple rises in Krasdonar as another one is under construction:
1/ On 23 August 2026 the Russian Orthodox Old-Rite Church of the Belokrinitsa hierarchy consecrated the church of St. John Chrysostom in the city. Metropolitan Korniliy led the service. The parish itself only dates from 1989.
5/ A separate Old Believer group, the Russian Old-Orthodox Church, also has a parish in Krasnodar called St. Catherine's. In 2025 it got permission for a bell tower and a Sunday school.
