Our budget is about YOU. Every dollar we invest is aimed at making Indianapolis a safer and stronger place for all.
Watch below to hear Director Andrew Merkley detail just some of what OPHS is all about, then head to indy.gov/ophs to learn more.
We're so excited to share that the Housing Hub has gone vertical!
Indy's first low-barrier shelter and housing navigation center will be getting nearly $2.8 million dedicated to it in our proposed 2027 budget, and it is on track to open next year, complete with 150 beds and a pet facility!
We can't wait to share more as progress continues.
You may have heard of StepUp Inc., an organization that has provided essential services in HIV prevention and care, and re-entry health for justice-involved people since 2003, but did you know they’re also a recipient of the Elevation Grant, administered by OPHS and the @IndyFoundation?
Emma McKee, HepLink Care Coordinator for StepUp Inc., spoke with us about the vital health services StepUp Inc. provides and how the Grant has strengthened their team and work.

The Office of Public Health and Safety is closed on Oct 12, 2026, in recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. All regular operations will resume the following day. We wish everyone a safe and meaningful holiday as we recognize and honor the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.
Yesterday, @RileyChildrens Health announced the launch of its Hospital-Linked Violence Intervention Program (HVIP), becoming the first pediatric hospital in Indiana and one of few children's hospitals nationwide to offer a comprehensive program focused on helping young victims of gun violence and their families recover.
Riley is collaborating with Indy Peace team members, who will provide immediate support, emotional guidance, resource navigation, and ongoing follow-up tailored to the needs of individual patients and families.
FAR EASTSIDE! Our partners at @pathwayindy are hosting a Mental Health Awareness Day event tomorrow, October 10th for those ages 18 and up.
From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., join Pathway, our Indy Peacemakers, our Indy Champions for Domestic Violence, and more for an afternoon dedicated to mental wellness, community connection, resources, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.
Register at pathwayindy.org/register-for…, and keep connected with Pathway Resource Center for more information!
Local farmers’ markets and farm stands are still selling, even in fall! The best part is that you’re benefiting your local community and neighbors.
A challenge for you, Indy: visit a neighborhood farmers’ market or local farm stand and fill your plate with tried-and-true or fresh-and-new groceries!
The Elevation Grants are meant to do just that: elevate the mission of Indianapolis’ grassroots organizations and propel the work to curb crime. We met up with InTouch Outreach Resource Center’s executive director, Yvette Markey, after September’s Elevation Grantee Convening to talk about ITOR’s mission and how the Elevation Grant has uplifted their work and range of services.
Find out more about ITOR at intouchoutreach.org.
🍎 The OPHS Division of Community Nutrition & Food Policy has food distribution events throughout October.
If you or someone you know could use access to fresh, healthy food, be sure to check the schedule and plan to attend.
For event updates and more information, visit indy.gov/food.
🛒 Every purchase makes a difference.
Our neighborhoods are home to small businesses and grocery stores owned by people from many different backgrounds and cultures. When you shop local, you help support local entrepreneurs, increase access to fresh foods, and strengthen our communities.
Shop small. Shop local. Support your community. 🏘️
September was a PACKED month for our Office of Public Health and Safety. Feeding our communities, educating neighbors on the importance of suicide prevention, and bringing together Indianapolis community leaders in violence prevention – not just boxes to check, but continuous opportunities to grow closer with our city.
Keep an eye out for what October has in store for us, and you!
As we wrap up Suicide Prevention Month, we wanted to thank everyone who attended our Youth Policy Forum this week. We are so grateful for your support, and especially grateful for the youth who have bravely shared their thoughts and experiences with us.
Remember-just because September is ending, it doesn't mean the resources and help are going away. We have so many 24/7 resources available to you. Visit indy.gov/mentalhealth to learn more about the AIC, CLCR, and more.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to data from World Population Review, Indiana is ranked fifth highest in the country with domestic violence reports (42.5% women, 27.9% men). Asking for help can be scary, but you don't have to do it alone.
Places that offer 24-hour crisis care, like our Indy Champions, are available as a source of solace and care. Visit indypsf.org/indy-champions for more.
