As the conference on #ChildMarriage & #ChildSexualExploitation concludes, one truth stands out—child marriage and #CSEAM are grave violations of children's rights that demand urgent action. While #childmarriage continues to trap children in cycles of abuse and the violation of their fundamental rights, #CSEAM is an organized, borderless crime thriving in the digital age. Tackling these issues requires a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach, stronger enforcement, comprehensive victim support—from counseling to rehabilitation, community sensitization, speedy trials and #justice, and systemic interventions at all levels. Organized by #JustRightsforChildren partners—@IndiaCPOrg (#ICP) & Association for Voluntary Action (#AVA)—in collaboration with #ANSLSA, this conference reinforced our collective responsibility to act. The fight doesn’t end here—it begins with all of us.

The society that celebrates child marriages often doesn’t realise what it is truly celebrating—the impending rape of a daughter, the impending rape of a child.

@ACTIVISTLAWYER, National Convenor of #JustRightsforChildren, raised some extremely pertinent questions at the conference on ‘#ChildMarriage & #ChildSexualExploitation’. He pointed out that with over 2 lakh cases pending in #POCSO courts across the country, the situation remains grim, and children continue to suffer in silence for countless years.
“The law remains a piece of paper unless it is acted upon—this fact is especially important when we speak about serious cases such as child sexual abuse,” he said while speaking at the state-level conference organised by Just Rights for Children partners -- @IndiaCPOrg (#ICP) & Association for Voluntary Action (#AVA) -- along with the State Legal Services Authority, Andaman & Nicobar Islands (#ANSLSA).

In an immensely insightful address at the conference in #PortBlair today, Advocate @RachnaTyagi24, Legal Counsel at #JustRightsforChildren, explained the landmark Supreme Court ruling on Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (#CSEAM) that merely viewing, possessing, or storing material depicting minors engaged in sexual activity constitutes an offence under the #POCSO Act. She also elaborated on why the apex court replaced the term ‘child pornography’ with #CSEAM, clarifying that the former implies a degree of consent, whereas the latter more accurately encompasses all forms of child sexual abuse material, including AI-generated content.

"Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material (#CSEAM) remains on the Internet indefinitely, transcending borders and causing lifelong trauma and harm to the victims. To effectively combat the crimes of child sexual abuse and child marriage, we must adopt a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach. Collaboration between policymakers, law enforcement, technology platforms, and #civilsociety is essential to prevent, detect, and eliminate these heinous crimes against children," said Jyoti Mathur, Policy Advisor, #JustRightsforChildren, at the state-level conference on ‘#ChildMarriage & #ChildSexualExploitation’ in #PortBlair today.

It is said in law: let 100 guilty go unpunished, but not one innocent be punished.
This basic theory of jurisprudence, I believe, also holds true for justice—one act of injustice allowed, one child deprived of justice due to a paucity, laxity, or gap in the law, one child denied justice while seeking it from the state—is a threat to justice everywhere in the world.

Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya, Judge, High Court of Calcutta, and Executive Chairman of A&N SLSA, said that besides strengthening the legal system, we need to raise social awareness about legal rights, whom to approach, and the available legal remedies. This information needs to percolate to the victims and those vulnerable to the crimes of #childmarriage and #childtrafficking.

One of the most important tenets of child rights is ensuring that children have good health, nutrition, education, and freedom from abuse and violence. Child marriage deprives children of all these rights, denying them the opportunity to develop into fully empowered individuals,” said Hon’ble Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta and Patron-in-Chief of (#ANSLSA), while addressing the state-level conference on
#ChildMarriage & Child Sexual Exploitation in #PortBlair.
He stated that the effective implementation of the law is crucial in curbing child marriage, which can be achieved by strengthening the legal framework, increasing the number of Child Marriage Prohibition Officers, and ensuring the availability of sufficient resources to enforce the laws.

2024 was a year of reckoning in the fight against #childmarriage. What began as a grassroots movement in 2023—with over 70,000 women, many of them survivors of child marriage, taking to the streets to demand an end to the practice—became an unstoppable force. With 250+ NGO partners, #JustRightsforChildren fought in courtrooms, in villages, and in policy halls. We saw victories. We saw change. And we saw a nation rise. The fight is not over, but we are closer than ever to ending child marriage in India.
Join us on @ndtv as former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, @Bhuwan_Ribhu, Child Rights Activist and Founder of Just Rights for Children, and actor @Neenagupta001 discuss the next steps to end child marriage by 2030.
