YOYO - a little motion piece I made earlier this year. No fancy cuts. No random motion. Just clean, intentional movement. Put this together in a few days. Open to work 📩

Hi founders and hiring managers, please stop asking for unpaid work trials. Do this instead: Few months back I interviewed with @brexHQ for a motion designer role. Didn't end up getting it (it was on-site in SF, visa stuff made it a bit tricky). But their process really stuck with me. Instead of giving an unpaid take-home assignment, they hire you for a day and you actually work with the team, remote or on-site. -You actually get to see how they work, their process, how they give feedback, the pace, not just stare at a brief -They get to see how you think and collaborate, not just judge one deliverable -Nobody's working for free, nobody's guessing An take-home assignment only tells a company what you can make. A trial day tells both sides if you can actually work together. One of these is worth so much more. More companies should be doing this.

Easing on this is making me sick. Honestly wouldn't expect this from a company built around motion.
Figma Motion now exports to Lottie & dotLottie. Millions of Figma users can now ship Lottie. Design it once, ship it everywhere. What do you want to see in Figma Motion next?

Totally get the hosting crunch when you're self-funded. Just a technical thought: allowing 10MB GIFs actually strains your bandwidth way more than letting free users upload optimized videos, especially since that same 10MB GIF could easily be a 2MB video.
Replying to @camduncalfe
Every time someone uploads video, that costs money... and don't get me wrong, I wish I had infinite cash to support this but it's just little ol' me — no funding — just my salary. So yeah, pro is to pay for the actual spend of the site. And maybe to support the people (literally just me) to continue building it 😉

The real test of a motion system isn't how cool the hero asset looks. It's whether the rest of the team can actually use it to ship things without needing you to hand-craft every single variation.

Big fan of Gumroad, but both the app and the video feel a like generic AI slop. We can do better!

Built this for a work trial as an excuse to really dig into @cavalry__app . Didn't land the job, and diving into a new tool under time pressure was probably a bad call...😅 but it was fun and I learned a ton. You can build full procedural launch animations in @cavalry__app - zero After Effects needed.

So I got invited to a motion design briefing call with a bunch of other motion designers. I declined.
Yet despite declining, I still got an email asking for a free "assignment": a full 1-minute video, for free.
Guess they didn't want to spend time talking to each candidate individually or even asking what they charge, but somehow have the audacity to ask for free work that would probably take a designer a week to finish. If this sounds familiar, take it as a sign: a company that won't value your time won't value your work either.

I get the argument, but I think it cuts both ways. I know plenty of people from the US and Europe who earn a big salary there and can live like kings in Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, etc. Their geo-adjusted salary doesn’t suddenly drop because their purchasing power is much higher abroad. Now flip that around. Someone from a lower-wage country earning 1/5 or 1/10 of that salary might want to visit the US or Europe for a couple of weeks. They could easily spend months of their salary on a short vacation. And it’s not just travel. Better infrastructure, access to opportunities, the ability to relocate, attend conferences, meet clients, or simply choose where you want to live all have value. If the output and performance are genuinely the same, I agree that location shouldn’t be used as an excuse to massively discount someone’s work. But pretending location has zero economic impact on someone’s life is also an oversimplification.
If you offer geo-based pay, then you are cruel. We don't do that at Polygon. If you offer geo-based pay and claim to compensate based on performance, then you are hypocritical. It immediately eliminates compensation based on performance because the person in [insert low wage country] who provides the exact same output as the person in [insert high wage country], gets paid 1/10th as much. Do right by your employees. The person living in SF likely made that choice, but not everyone can choose where they live.
