At Ellora in Maharashtra stands the magnificent Kailasa Temple, Cave 16 of the Ellora Caves and one of India’s most extraordinary achievements in rock-cut architecture. Dating to the Rashtrakuta period, the temple is carved from a single mass of basalt rock, transforming solid stone into an elaborate architectural masterpiece.
Here’s what makes it remarkable: instead of building upwards with blocks of stone, artisans carved from the top down, removing the surrounding rock to reveal the temple. Its towering structure, sculpted pillars, and intricate reliefs reflect extraordinary planning, precision, and craftsmanship, all achieved with the tools and techniques of the time.
Part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ellora Caves, Kailasa Temple invites visitors to look beyond its grandeur and discover the ingenuity etched into every surface. A journey to Ellora is a journey into India’s living legacy of architecture, artistry and imagination.

Kalamkari, a traditional textile art known to be commonly seen in traditions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, transforms plain cotton fabric by adding intricate compositions of flowers, vines, birds and traditional motifs to them. While Kalamkari can be created using a pen, its most distinctive method uses hand-carved wooden blocks to print repeating patterns onto the cotton fabric.
The fascinating part is that each block is carved with a specific section of the design, and artisans carefully align the impressions to build a continuous pattern. Different blocks can be used for outlines and colours, while dyes and mordants help create and fix the colours on the fabric. The process demands precision , a slight misalignment can change the rhythm of the entire design.
Long before mass-produced prints, these skilled techniques allowed Indian artisans to create richly patterned textiles by hand. Kalamkari is more than decoration, it is a tradition where wood, fabric, colour and craftsmanship come together to keep India’s longstanding textile heritage alive.
