HRF Condemns Arrests of Dr Randall Sequeira and Laxman Naik, Demands End to Repression of Anti-Bauxite Movement in South Odisha
by Human Rights Forum
countercurrents.org/2026/10/…
The Human Rights Forum (HRF) has condemned the arrests of Dr Randall Sequeira, a healthcare worker associated with Medico Friend Circle, and Laxman Naik, a Dalit leader, for their links to the anti-bauxite mining movement in South Odisha. The arrests come amid continuing opposition to mining projects in the Sijimali and Kutrumali hills, where Adivasis and Dalits face repeated arrests, serious criminal charges and prolonged incarceration. HRF alleges that successive cases are being used to keep movement leaders behind bars and intimidate communities defending their land and livelihoods. It demands their immediate release and an end to the criminalisation of democratic resistance.
The world is watching India and its use of prisons to extinguish voices like those of Vishal Singh, who have been exposing the deep roots of the State's Violence against India's communities whose labour, lands and resources are grabbed for 'development'. Act on the appeal below
🇮🇳#India: #HRD & filmmaker Vishal Singh, detained since June 2025, is in critical health condition and was hospitalised again on 04/10 due to breathing difficulties
📣The authorities must ensure his access to proper medical care & release him immediately

Documentary maker Vishal Singh's condition is now even more serious as the post has updated. Why?

Amidst a discourse which saturates the 'political' of the prisoner with either trauma or heroism, this is so refreshing to read. Grief does not have to be a spectacle.
The public grief, the “suffering” we are expected to share. These moments are few and far between – court verdicts, bail hearings and rejections, the occasional news report. However, private grief is less romantic. Rather, it shunts romanticism. @imammuzzammil writes.

Open Access | The Sangh’s consistently articulated goal is to cleanse, and then become, this organism. This commitment to sangathan, or collective, the RSS’s leaders have long insisted, is understood as a necessary part of overcoming an alleged Hindu emasculation and disunity. For the Sangh, sangathan is both the means and the end: the path to Hindu Rashtra.
This organicism, therefore, is not simply metaphorical. It is an ecological organising principle, part of the Sangh’s stated goal of “Sangh samaj banega”—the Sangh will become society. The RSS understands that having spawning diverse organisations is not incompatible with organisational singularity.
What the world’s first network map of the RSS, revealing over twenty-five hundred organisations with concrete, traceable, material ties leading to the organisation, tell us about how the Sangh functions, Felix Pal (@FelixPal8) explains: caravanmagazine.in/politics/…

To the Mayor of London (@MayorofLondon. @SadiqKhan),
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat plans to come to London in two weeks. This is unacceptable.
I have emailed you and MOPAC asking what City Hall intends to do. This directly affects various communities and matters to all Londoners.

Khalid argues that the colonial state did not replace indigenous institutions with a modern bureaucracy in Singhbhum – specifically, the Kolhan region inhabited by the Ho people. Instead, it used those very same institutions into instruments of its own authority.

We would all be relieved if the reports were false. But this statement seems to sidestep what people are actually asking. Muhammad Junaid publicly spoke about feeling unsupported. Is he wrong about his own experience?
If CJP has been working around the clock, make that visible. Publish the numbers. How many people are facing police action? How many have legal representation? How many cases are being followed? A movement shouldn’t ask for blind trust.
All news and rumours regarding Mohammad Junaid are false.
He is safe, is receiving all necessary legal assistance and was also present at our volunteers get-together for a while.
We urge everyone to stop spreading misinformation and hate. Whatever action took place at his residence was addressed promptly in the first instance.
We have always treated Junaid with immense respect and we will continue to stand by him (& other volunteers).

We are reading @hajara_najeeb's article on how adoption in 2018 of Central Civil Service (Conduct) Rules formalised the state's control on #academicfreedom
m.thewire.in/article/rights/…
Replying to @thewire_in @hajara_najeeb
A steady decline in academic freedom reveals a pattern involving both state and non-state actors – legal policies, administrative bodies and fringe groups that have continuously attempted to curb and silence academic spaces.
