Ok but short term empty homes are, by definition, not homes which are just lying around and could home a family - they are houses undergoing renovation, in probate, in the process of being sold etc. There will always be many in these categories and they are not a solution.

I disagree — not because historical education at the school level shouldn’t partly be about instilling feelings of national pride, but because (pace Porter) I don’t think empire has ever really been integral to ordinary Britons’ feelings of national pride.
Pupils absolutely should be taught that the British Empire was great. That Britain has been a force for good. That it's something to be proud of. Not because it's an 'objective truth', but because it's a necessary subjective one for the state to survive and inspire pride.

Shout out to all those MPs, councillors and ‘local patriots’ campaigning against ‘out of character’, ‘too bulky’ or ‘green belt’ developments. Average inner London rents now exceed £3,000pcm 🥳

It seems that we can always rely on nationalists - of all flavours - getting angry about the decisions of an independent judiciary…

I keep seeing *loads* of those @forduk Ranger pick-ups around London, the hideous US-style trucks. You might just as well get, "I'm a wanker" tattooed on your forehead than drive one in a city. Two tonnes, massively high bonnet. If it hit a kid – or me – they'd be toast.

If ⁦@Keir_Starmer⁩ wants to become a truly hegemonic political figure he should forget about modelling himself on previous Labour leaders but on Stanley Baldwin who killed off opponents with a mixture of pragmatism, apparent kindness & sly scheming. theguardian.com/commentisfre…
