We can, should and indeed must have nice things. This is one of them.
This week we'd like to share these fantastic photos of our Colne Valley Viaduct 📷👇. The viaduct is the longest railway bridge in the UK and one of the most significant structures on the HS2 route. Stretching 2.1 miles (3.4 km), it will carry the railway across the Colne Valley Regional Park, connecting London and the Midlands while carefully navigating one of the country’s most environmentally sensitive landscapes. Went to birthday party for a friend’s kid today. Room full of entrepreneurs I knew before any of us had kids. Every single person is more successful and ambitious after having kids than before. There is a lesson in that.

Atlanta just gave the green light to a major transformation of Ponce de Leon Avenue. A collection of low-rise commercial buildings across from Hotel Clermont could become: • Up to 375 apartments • 10,000 square feet of street-level retail • 13 stories along Ponce • A nine-story transition near neighboring homes • New green space across the 1.75-acre site The City Council approved the required rezoning. Now Atlanta needs to get this built.

Most investors regret their bad deals. Leo Polovets regrets the great ones he passed on over price. Some became $10B companies. Price is the easiest reason to say no. It’s also the most expensive. @lpolovets is General Partner at @humbavc. Thirteen years ago, he co-founded the seed fund @SusaVentures. When I asked what he’d tell his younger self, his answer was tactical: “Our biggest misses were ones where we liked everything except the price and then we passed because of the price and then years later it’s like a multi billion or sometimes ten billion dollar company.” Two of them skipped seed and went straight to Series A, at roughly three times the price Susa was comfortable with. His conclusion: “We love everything except the price, like we should have just done it.” His rule now is simple. If the doubt is the team, the product or the market, pass. If the only doubt is price, a gap of 10 to 30 percent can be bridged. Double still feels pricey to him, but on those two misses, even three times the entry price would have been a great investment. When the outcome is a ten billion dollar company, a 3x entry price is a rounding error. When the outcome is a zero, the entry price never mattered either. Price is the one mistake you can afford. The pass is not. This episode is presented by @juniper_square, with additional support from @AlphaSenseInc. Full episode below 👇 youtu.be/l_1170mxqqA

Quite the story, do we know another European site where this happened (in recent years) to 5+ vehicles? #pyrofuse ⚡️⚡️⚡️ #alwaysbecharging ?! photo: Adressa/Adrian Minde
An IONITY station in Norway killed several EVs by blowing their pyrofuses. 6 cars in total were affected. The site is IONITY's only Ekoenergetyka pilot site in Norway. I just checked, and all the Ekoenergetyka chargers there are unavailable, while the Alpitronic charger at the same site is still live. Source and photo: adressa.no

North Bethesda (Rockville Pike) is Maryland's version of Tysons.
BIG PLANS FOR NORTH BETHESDA. Metro is moving toward a deal with Hines to transform 13.9 acres beside the Red Line into “The Nexus,” a massive transit-oriented district featuring: • A new north Metro entrance • 2+ million square feet • 809 homes • 930,000 square feet of life-science space • 100,000 square feet of retail and commercial space • The @UofMaryland Institute for Health Computing Nearly $119 million in public funding has been identified for infrastructure, the station entrance and the institute. This is how you turn a Metro station into an economic engine.

Some interesting historical examples in the FT of the foolishness of applying the death tax to family firms. "After the second world war", notes Andrew Hill, "estate duty weighed heavily. To offset the risk that tax might bury a business alongside its owners, companies limited growth, liquidated assets or listed their shares. Historian Marie Fletcher has suggested this may even explain postwar under-investment in technology." Labour has revived this anti-investment policy. Before Reeves’ 2024 Budget, Seth Woodmansterne, third generation managing director of greetings card manufacturer Woodmansterne Publications, invested in new warehouse and printing capacity. “I couldn’t make those commitments today,” he told me. “It feels like we’re in survival mode . . . ” The UK’s family-owned companies employ almost 60% of private sector workers and contribute more than £400bn in taxes. Labour has introduced a policy that will not only raise virtually no revenue but has the specific effect of preventing those companies from investing more. Exceptionally dim.
