Webinar for secondary school leaders and teachers: Beyond reteaching: How to use assessment data to better inform new learning Presented by Caiti Wade Thursday 22 October, 4:15 – 5 pm AEDT Assessment data can do more than tell us what needs to be retaught. Used well, it can help us raise the bar for new learning by carefully considering the potential access points for students. This session focuses on how to identify the prior knowledge that matters for upcoming content, and how to use past assessment data to reduce gaps in new learning without lowering expectations. Caiti Wade is a professional practice and pedagogy expert, writer of The Disruptive Educator and co-host of the podcast When Will They Learn? Register: ap1.hubs.ly/H01r_Bv0

Teachers and school leaders in Western Australia – we’d love to hear from you. Impact Curriculum (formerly Ochre Education) is conducting a survey to understand how WA schools are putting the new Western Australian curriculum into practice: which resources you use, how you use them and what support would help you implement the curriculum well. Your responses will help shape the resources, professional learning and support we develop for WA schools. The survey takes about 10 minutes and closes Sunday 25 October. ap1.hubs.ly/H01rcm_0 #WAeducation #Curriculum #ImpactCurriculum

Thank you to everyone who joine @Dr Amanda VanDerHeyden in Perth for our workshop on MTSS in mathematics, and to Teach Well for hosting. The session covered how classwide intervention reaches more students more efficiently, why a focus on 145 essential ‘tool’ skills matters from Pre-Primary through to algebra readiness, and how SpringMath supplements a strong Tier 1 curriculum rather than replacing it. Slides and further resources are available at ap1.hubs.ly/H01qGcp0 Missed the session? Think Forward Educators are releasing a webinar with Dr. Amanda VanDerHeyden at the end of October. We’ll share the link as it’s live, or keep an eye out on their events page. #SpringMath #MTSS #MathsEducation

For the past five years, the Impact Curriculum team have been working with practising teachers to develop an ambitious and knowledge-rich curriculum. We believe all students deserve equitable access to a high-quality curriculum that allows them to build knowledge and skill over time. A knowledge-rich curriculum gives students the opportunity to learn powerful knowledge: ambitious content and skills, carefully specified and sequenced. The chunking and sequencing of units in Impact Curriculum materials are shown in our progression diagrams. To supplement the dependencies and relationships described in those diagrams, we have been creating knowledge graphs, which detail the connections between curriculum standards, knowledge points and skills. They drill down beyond the unit level to individual lessons, which lets us examine the coherence of our own curriculum. Read more:  ap1.hubs.ly/H01qGDZ0

Thank you to everyone who joined Dr Amanda VanDerHeyden and Dr Reid Smith in Melbourne for our sold-out event on MTSS in mathematics. We appreciated the discussion and your questions; and for taking time out at the end of a busy term. We looked at why MTSS results vary so widely after more than 20 years of implementation, and at MTSS as a system for improving instruction and outcomes rather than simply assigning tiers. That starts with classwide intervention, lifting the class mastery and building both accuracy and fluency to build foundational skills for students to be algebra ready by Y9. A huge thank you Dr Amanda VanDerHeyden @amandavande1 , Terri Soutor @terrisoutor and Jess Bondhus for crossing the world to spend the past few weeks with the Impact Curriculum and Teach Well teams in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Your generosity with your time, expertise and stories from the field has given us a far richer understanding  of SpringMath @springmathk8 and how it brings MTSS to life in mathematics. That understanding will sit at the heart of how we bring SpringMath to Australian schools in 2027. We hope the city stops and the animal encounters made the long flights worth it, and we can't wait to keep working together through 2027 and beyond. We're also grateful to the hosts who opened their doors and their thinking along the way: 🏫 Catholic Education Sandhurst and Sam and the team at St John's School, Euroa, for welcoming us into classrooms and showing us what great maths teaching looks like on the ground. 💬 McKinnon for hosting a lively, honest discussion on the state of maths in Australia. 🤝 Fogarty Foundation for bringing together a cross-section of education leaders for a thought-provoking roundtable in Perth. And to everyone who joined a meeting, roundtable or event: thank you. Your questions and insights deepened our understanding of the maths challenges facing Australian students and sparked energising conversations about how SpringMath can be part of the solution. #SpringMath #MTSS #MathsEducation

Thank you to the Westpac Foundation for supporting Impact Curriculum and the Impact Teaching Group with an Impact Grant. The grant will enable us to work with 10 small schools to provide integrated supports for curriculum, instruction, assessment and intervention across literacy and numeracy. Small schools are such an important and critically under-supported part of the Australian education landscape, especially when it comes to the challenges of curriculum and assessment. The project will provide coherent practical support to a cluster of small schools to improve student learning outcomes. It will also enable us to learn more about what it takes to create meaningful change in these complex settings. We are excited to be working with and learning from small schools. No matter where a student learns, they deserve access to the highest-quality curriculum and instruction. We are proud to support school leaders and teachers in small schools with high-quality tools and learning opportunities. We are very thankful to Westpac, St. George, Bank SA and Bank of Melbourne Foundations for supporting this important work to drive educational equity. Our resources are being adapted to a wide range of schools across Australia. This week we are spotlighting Borinya Wangaratta Community Partnership, a specialist school setting for young people who become disengaged or disconnected from mainstream schooling.  The word Borinya comes from the local Bangerang language and means ‘ana’ or branch of a river that has parted from its main course. In 2026, Borinya serves 47 students from Years 8 to 12, with 13% of students being from a First Nations background.  Ochre resources have been embedded as the core teaching resource for literacy and numeracy. The resources have been adapted to suit small‑group instruction, one‑to‑one support and re‑engagement with learning for students experiencing interrupted schooling.  Since implementing Ochre resources, Borinya has seen: ⭐ Increased classroom engagement and greater student readiness to learn, supported by clear, structured lessons and predictable routines. ⭐ Growth in literacy and numeracy knowledge, skills and understanding. ⭐ Students becoming more confident in discussing their learning. ⭐ A shared language across literacy and numeracy lessons, supporting reflective conversations with staff and peers. ⭐ Wellbeing improvements arising from students’ success in learning. We are thrilled that you have shared how you have adapted the resources to suit the needs of your students.

We are thrilled to highlight the impact of our resources in schools across the country! This week we are spotlighting Australia’s southernmost school. Bruny Island District School is a small public school on Bruny Island, Tasmania, with a current enrolment of 62 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Bruny Island consists of three composite classes: K–P–1, Years 2–3, and Years 4–6. The Ochre units have enabled teachers to deliver high-quality whole-class instruction to students with a diverse range of learning needs within composite classrooms. Over the past 18 months, the Years 2–3 and Years 4–6 classes have collectively completed 10 novel studies.  The Bruny Island teachers have reflected that:  🌟 The Ochre units have been a massive timesaver for staff, and have raised expectations through more challenging content, taught earlier.  🌟 Learning in a multi-age environment has been particularly beneficial, as younger students are exposed to more complex texts and ideas earlier, while also participating in rich discussions with older students.  🌟 Teachers are using the novel study units to create meaningful connections across other curriculum areas, including science and HASS.  🌟 Bruny Island’s Year 2–3 class is team-taught by two teachers. The Ochre units have made it easy to handover the class thanks to their clear structure and lesson plans. We are so happy that you could adapt the Ochre resources to suit your small school. Thank you for sharing your story!

2025 was a big year for Ochre, our partners, and the schools, teachers and school leaders we support. We recently published the Ochre Education | Impact Teaching Group 2025 Annual Report. It includes case studies of how schools are putting our knowledge-rich, evidence-informed resources to work – nine schools and three school systems, from a 62 student school on Bruny Island to a system of 292 schools across Melbourne and beyond. Composite classrooms, secondary maths faculties, a specialist setting for students disengaged from mainstream schooling. In 2025 we launched Impact Assessment, joined forces with Teach Well, entered a 10 year partnership with the Tasmanian Government as part of the Lifting Literacy Plan, and moved our Advancing Curriculum for Equity program into pilot implementation across schools in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Thank you to our partners and funders, and to the teachers and school leaders putting this work into practice every day. Read the report: ap1.hubs.ly/H01n40D0
