My wife asked me for a divorce yesterday, and when I asked her why, she said, “Because I’m tired of pretending to love you.” We’ve been married for six years, and we have a four-year-old son. I thought we were happy. We weren’t rich, but we had a peaceful home, and I never cheated on her. Three months ago, she started coming home late from work. Sometimes, she’d sit in the bathroom crying, but whenever I asked what was wrong, she’d say she was just stressed. I believed her. Yesterday, I came home and found her sitting on our bed with her wedding ring beside her. She told me she’d been thinking about leaving me for months. I asked if there was another man. She said no. I asked if I’d done something wrong. She started crying and said, “That’s the problem. You’ve done nothing wrong.” I couldn’t understand it. How could a woman leave a man who had given her everything he could? Then she said something that broke me. “Do you remember when I got pregnant with our son, and the doctor told us I might not survive another pregnancy?” I nodded. She continued, “I found out last month that I’m pregnant again.” I was shocked. I didn’t even know she was pregnant. I held her hands and told her we’d face whatever came together. But she pulled away. Then she looked me in the eyes and said: “That’s not why I’m leaving. I went to the hospital alone because I was planning to terminate the pregnancy. I don’t want another child with you.” I felt like the woman I’d spent six years loving had become a complete stranger. I asked her one last question. “Have you ever loved me?” She wiped her tears and answered: “I loved you enough to marry you. But I stayed because I was afraid of starting over.” Then she picked up her ring and walked out of the room. And for the first time in six years, I realised I had been fighting to save a marriage that my wife had already abandoned.
