On this date in 1977, a chartered plane carrying the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in a heavily wooded swamp in Amite County, Mississippi.
The flight was en route from Greenville, South Carolina, to a show at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It carried 26 people. Three of the band members and both pilots perished in the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined the probable cause was fuel exhaustion and total loss of power from both engines.
Although several of the band members survived the crash, it effectively ended their careers for several years. They would reunite in 1987.
The band had released their album "Street Survivors" just days earlier. The original cover, seen below, was quickly replaced with a photo without flames.
Timing is everything.
