The Chief Magistrate's Court of Kampala at Buganda Road, presided over by Her Worship Winnie Nankya Jatiko, has remanded lawyer and human rights defender Aloikin Praise Opoloje (@AloikinOpoloje) to Luzira Prison until 14th October 2026 on a charge of using another person's SIM card. That SIM card belongs to her mother. The charge is needless. It is designed to intimidate and harass her over her sharp criticism of the role of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) in commanding the escalating abductions across Uganda. The rule of law is the lifeblood of a civilised society. The political persecution and judicial harassment of the CDF's critics will boomerang, and it must stop. Ugandans love to speak their minds. The State exists to protect freedom of speech and expression, guaranteed by Article 29(1)(a) of the Constitution, not to muzzle and intimidate its critics. Article 23(6) entitles her to apply for bail, and Article 28(3)(a) presumes her innocent. Shame on the police who lured her into abduction this week. Shame on those who prolonged her ordeal with bogus, flimsy and unmerited charges and who needlessly sent her to prison when they could grant her bail today. Strength and solidarity to Aloikin, her family and her colleagues. Cheers to every friend, family, activist or Ugandan rooting for her liberty. Keep the hope alive. The Ugandan story is still being written, and the freedom crusaders will write the last word and have the final say.
