20 years a teacher-I’ve seen many changes, met many challenges & suffered pressures. But I’ve always known it’s not about me-it’s about the children I teach. Today I received this message in a Xmas card-these few words far outweigh the negatives. #getintoteaching

Hear me out: What if every school produced a short annual School Assurance Statement. Not a glossy SEF. Not folders of evidence. Not performative paperwork. Just 8–10 pages answering: • What are we doing well? • What are our 3 biggest priorities? • How do we know? • Which pupils/groups need more from us? • What has improved this year? • What are governors challenging us on? • What do we need to do next? Instead of an OFSTED inspection, an external reviewer visits and asks one key question: “Is this school’s view of itself accurate?”

The child is the starting point for education. Ignoring the barriers some children face doesn't make inspection tougher. It just allows people to look at schools serving the most advantaged communities, mistake advantage for excellence, and congratulate themselves on their rigour
Inspection is to judge the quality of education pupils receive. It is fairly likely that schools with fewer challenges will be able to deliver a higher quality of education - including for the most disadvantaged pupils. Despite the *exceptional* efforts of school leaders in the most challenging circumstances, it is not in the best interests of pupils if inspection changes to become a way of judging the effort of a school's senior leaders - and not the quality of education pupils receive.

Spot on. Our cohort in yr7 are so weak yet make 3 level progress but are labelled as failure because they didn't attain the magic number to pass GCSE

If schools with the highest levels of SEND and disadvantage are consistently more likely to receive lower Ofsted judgements, it’s sending a dangerous message: inclusion carries risk. Schools opening doors widest shouldn't be the ones paying the highest accountability price…

It’s KS2 results day tomorrow. If anyone has any questions about accountability measures, which pupils are included and which ones aren’t, and how things are calculated, please do ask. I’ll be around all day.

In today’s education news… Amanda Spielman and Michael Gove have both been awarded peerages – two individuals who, in my opinion, have done more damage to the teaching profession than almost anyone else. Their policies and leadership have played a huge role in creating the

What an absolutely amazing day yesterday hosting ‘The Ultimate Coding Course’ to a sell out audience at The Grand Hotel in Newcastle. Was a honour to present alongside the fantastic Julian S Wood @Ideas_Factory , Carol Allen @caroljallen and Steve Bunce @stevebunce who all blew the audience away with presentations and ideas of the very highest quality. There were also brilliant interactive coding workshops from Andy Husband from @TTSResources (who also donated the incredible Loti-Bot robot to each and every delegate) and Danica Chapman from @2SimpleSoftware who wowed everyone with the great range of tools available on Purple Mash for teaching coding to all pupils. Delegates left brimming with enthusiasm and ideas for developing coding and computational thinking in their own schools. This was the first time since before the pandemic that I have been able to host a large scale event like this and was lovely to see and hear the buzz and excitement in the room throughout the day. A massive thank you to TTS and 2Simple for their incredible sponsorship, without their support thr event would not have been possible. HUGE smile on my face still today after being able to facilitate this great CPD event for North East teachers. Here’s to another similar event in 2025!

What an impressive piece of interviewing this is from @alexaljoe. To have the poise to speak in two languages simultaneously, remembering the answers and translating for the audience at home, all when live on camera is remarkable.

**NEW FOR JANUARY 2025** “Children and young people’s enjoyment of writing is at almost its lowest level in a decade.” Clark, Picton and Lant 'June 2020' I am launching a writing project for KS2 classes from January 2025 to June 2025 to tackle the issue of apathy in attitudes to writing. I have spent the last 15 years working on this with 100s of schools leading huge changes in attitudes to writing and as a result, improvements in standards. If you are interested in learning more for your school/class, prices for the 2 term project start from just £395. Learn more and register interest here: clusterblogging.net/blog/202…
