Indigenous Peoples Day is today and it’s important to remember Native Americans are not merely historical people. We are still here and the oldest injustice in US history—the dispossession of land from hundreds of Indigenous nations mainly by fraudulent treaties—is still ongoing!

Bacteria have immune systems to defend against their viruses. This animation shows the proposed mechanism of the Zorya defense system from our work with @NMITaylorLab: a proton-driven membrane complex related to the bacterial flagellar stator. doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-0…

Been reading a remarkable book long since forgotten by James Thomas Flexner the son of Dr. Simon Flexner the founding Director of @RockefellerUniv and nephew of Abraham Flexner of the “Flexner Report.” It’s like a Microbe Hunters of early Colonial and American medicine. First written in 1937, detailed but not fussy, well written, lousy title, found it as one of the Dover resurrection editions of the 1970s which were common when I was a HS student

Can bacteria have too many flagella? More flagella help Salmonella swim faster and spread farther, but building them slows growth. In our new preprint, we quantify this trade-off and predict an optimum close to wild type. 📄 doi.org/10.64898/2026.08.20.…

How do bacteria build their flagella? We’ve put together an animation of Salmonella flagellum assembly based on cryo-EM and X-ray structures. From the membrane-embedded machinery to the growing filament, here’s how the parts come together, step-by-step.

Scheduled to go on @AC360 tonight around 8:30 PM Eastern, 7:30 PM Central and speak with @JohnBerman about a possible lab-associated case of pneumonic plague in Russia. FYI the lab in Irutsk, Siberia is close to a zone of the Central Asian steppes where plague is endemic

Many thanks @JohnBerman for hosting me this evening on @AC360 as I explain why it makes sense for a Russian institute on the northern edge of the Central Asian steppes where plague circulates in wild animal populations to study the plague bacillus but the puzzling disconnect between Russian Government communications and the actions around quarantine and hospital control
