What’s wrong with that? There’s still the afternoons!!! Anyway, going to work is largely sitting at a desk all day with a cup of tea isn’t it?

By the way I’m “elderly” and not one of the people I know of my age voted leave so stop having a go at us

And many middle aged remain voters have now become elderly leave voters, so what’s your point?

Well, if I don’t care about myself there’s fat chance anybody else will, especially with dismissive attitudes like yours

I’m old and am not downsizing because of Stamp Duty. It wouldn’t free enough capital after the stress of moving, Stamp Duty, probably having to pay for work on the new house to make it how I want it. I’ve looked into it many times, and, believe me, stamp duty IS the reason.

But you still have to pay stamp duty. So, if you sell a house for £1m and buy an expensive, say, £2m house, you’d pay roughly the same in stamp duty as you’d save in IHT so my guess is not too many pensioners would bother with the upheaval simply to avoid IHT.

Why should old people sell their houses? Why don’t you sell yours? I want to stay in the house I’ve spent years making just right for me. What’s it to you if I have a couple more rooms than you think I need?

Why are you so keen to get me to sell the house I’ve spent 30 years spending my hard-earned money on - years of effort to make it just how I want and when I can finally enjoy it now I no longer have to work? Who are you to assume it “no longer suits my needs”?

The best way to encourage downsizing is to scrap stamp duty for such sales. If I downsize I’d end up with a much smaller house and no profit, especially if I have to pay for any upgrades. What is wrong with staying in a house that I have spent years making just what I want

Would love you to give Twilight Hotel a listen on Bandcamp. All the music by my singer-guitarist friend Ian Tasker. The lyrics are mine and are included on the site. Title track is radio friendly. Allison would do a great soulful version of Lift Me Up! @IanTasker @outsidechild13
