Copper is trading around $14,470 per tonne today, which is ~$400 per tonne (~3%) below its all-time high....despite no news on tariffs and the first Fed rate hike in 3 years. Copper is on course for a weekly gain of ~3%. This is because physical buying has STRENGTHENED this past week.
The Yangshan premium, the amount paid above the London Metal Exchange (LME) price to import copper cathode into China, has increased to $124 per tonne today... the highest level since November 2022 (chart below 👇). And, the COMEX continues to trade at a premium to the LME (the 3-month is ~$140 per tonne & the 6-month is ~$400 per tonne).
This is not surprising...
Governments worldwide are investing heavily in grid infrastructure, rearmament and defence... while hyperscalers are racing to be the first with the largest data-centre capacity. There will continue to be significant buyers of physical copper, whether the Fed continues to hike or not.

Day 32 in office. President Abelardo de la Espriella, “El Tigre.” @ABDELAESPRIELLA
@marcorubio and Foreign Minister Omar Bula signed a U.S.–Colombia critical minerals framework. Public and private capital — guarantees, loans, equity, offtake, insurance — to identify and finance mining and processing projects over the next SIX MONTHS. Clock starts now.
“…secure supply chains in the mining of critical materials…”
Don’t blink.
A New Chapter For Mining In Colombia: Pro-Mining Administration Takes Office In Bogotá robertsinn.substack.com/p/a-…
In less than 30 days, the tone from Bogotá has changed decisively—from restriction and uncertainty to investment, permitting reform and resource development—raising the possibility that one of the most geologically endowed countries in the Americas is finally prepared to turn its mineral wealth into economic growth. @Frank_Giustra @IanHarrisMining @Ariski73 $CNL $CGNT.V $ARIS

Only six major copper discoveries have been made worldwide since 2020, totaling 8.8 million tonnes, even as exploration budgets rose to $3.3B in 2025.
Grassroots exploration has fallen to a historic low share of spending. Instead of finding new deposits, companies are pouring budgets into brownfield expansions on mines they already have.
The largest deposit driving recent growth, Filo del Sol, was discovered in 2000.
Primary mine output is expected to peak around 2030. New mines take 15 to 20 years to build.

My surprise here isn’t the price action. It’s how long the market ignored it or played chicken. Might be just another canary in the coal mine.
Tungsten prices rose 310% between January and July, one of the sharpest commodity rallies of the year.
China produced 79% of the world's mined tungsten in 2025 and controls 85% of refining capacity, its own mined output actually fell 10% year-on-year as export controls tightened.
Even if every announced project outside China succeeds, S&P Global still projects a 16,000-tonne supply gap by 2030.
Prices have already cleared the cost needed to fund new mines. New projects can still take up to 16 years to reach production.

“The copper supply deficit is real,” @Frank_Giustra said. “Projects like this one will be put into production. And now we have a very mining-friendly government in Colombia. A perfect storm.”

@Cu_Giant intercepts 771 meters at Mocoa as @Frank_Giustra says project is “getting bigger and bigger”
(Kitco News by @JeremySzafron) - The latest drilling supports the model behind a billion-tonne resource as the world searches for its next generation of large copper mines.
Seven hundred seventy-one meters of mineralization would be the entire headline at most copper projects.
At Mocoa, the more important detail may be that the #copper showed up almost exactly where the model said it would.
