Not a tiny fragment, nor a single sherd of pottery, but a full, voluminous Anglo-Saxon space from the 9th century at St Wystan’s in Repton, Derbyshire. The spiral columns - perhaps a memory of St Peter’s shrine. Holy air encased in stone. Betjeman’s words describe it perfectly.

Pearl & Tortoiseshell Keys. A piano that looks like it belongs in a jewel box. ✨🎹
This lavish square piano (1853)—made in New York by Nunns & Clark—pairs an extravagantly carved rosewood case with a keyboard embellished in mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, and abalone. The Met notes that the naturals are covered in mother-of-pearl, while the black keys are veneered in tortoiseshell with abalone detailing.
It wasn’t just an instrument—it was a status symbol, likely intended for display at New York’s Crystal Palace Exhibition (1853)

It’s World Book Day and a favourite of mine is Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle. Whilst I know that the Mortmain family would not necessarily have sported any Schiaparelli for me it has something of its spirit @RISDMuseum #1930s
