Hey Penn Staters‼️ Please be mindful today watching the Nittany Lions play the Fighting Illini. The Fighting Illini used to have racist Native American mascots, traditions, and culture that some of their fans still follow today. #WeAre #WeAreStillHere #BanNDNMascots
The Fighting Illini are a team that formerly had a racist Native Mascot that was called Chief Illiniwek. They still participate in racist Native American things with their chants, dances and dressing up "regalia", war paint, and most offensively wearing headdresses.
What even is an Illini anyway?

🧵 Check out this Cherokee Freeman history project & exhibit that Dr. Reed's Advanced Public History class worked on in conjunction w/ the Cherokee Nation History Museum last semester. How fantastic to see it opening this week. Congratulations! @jreedmo @PSULiberalArts @IPSA_PSU
In 2021 we launched the #Freedmen art & history project. The Cherokee story is deeper, richer and more honest thanks to this effort. We are better for embracing @CherokeeNation citizens of freedmen descent. See the freedmen exhibit & share the experience.
