Somalia has recently deposited instruments of accession to the 1992 Civil Liability Convention and the 1992 Fund Convention with the International Maritime Organization and will become the 124th Member State of the 1992 Fund in June 2027.
With the longest coastline on mainland Africa, and located along major international shipping routes, Somalia remains at risk of oil pollution from passing tankers. The IOPC Funds therefore welcomes Somalia to the 1992 Fund, noting the importance of the financial protection that the international liability and compensation regime provides to those affected by oil pollution incidents. Somalia also deposited instruments of accession to 12 other key IMO treaties, further strengthening the State’s national maritime legal framework. #Maritime #EnvironmentalProtection #OilPollution
Yesterday the IOPC Funds’ Secretariat undertook an interactive HNS training session delivered by experienced technical advisers from @ITOPF_Ltd .
The session, which included staff from all departments, consisted of presentations and a tabletop exercise focusing on a theoretical incident involving hazardous and noxious substances.
Following the recent confirmation that the 2010 HNS Convention will enter into force in November 2027, the IOPC Funds’ Secretariat is increasing its efforts to prepare for both the first session of the HNS Fund Assembly and the establishment of a fully functioning HNS Fund. Training, such as that delivered by ITOPF, is vital to those preparations. Thank you to the ITOPF team! iopcfunds.org/aoot #workingtogether #HNS #Maritime
