๐ Tonightโs the night! ๐
Weโre incredibly proud that the Immuno-Oncology Clinical Network (IOCN) has been shortlisted for the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2026 in the Patient Safety Education and Training Award category.
Being shortlisted is fantastic recognition of the work that goes into improving education, knowledge and confidence around immunotherapy and immune-related adverse events โ and, ultimately, supporting safer care for patients.
It also reflects the commitment of the incredible multidisciplinary community that contributes to, supports and engages with the IOCN across the UK. ๐
Weโre looking forward to joining colleagues from across healthcare at tonightโs awards ceremony and celebrating the brilliant work being done to improve patient safety.
๐ค Wish us luck!

๐ Day 2 of the IO Champions Masterclass is underway!
After a fantastic first day of learning, discussion, networking and plenty of shared experiences, our IO Champions are back for Day 2 in Birmingham!
Yesterday really demonstrated what this Masterclass is all about โ bringing together healthcare professionals from across the UK and Ireland, connecting different professions and specialties, and creating opportunities to learn from each other as well as from our fantastic faculty.
Today weโre building on those conversations with another packed programme exploring the complexities of Immuno-Oncology and immune-related toxicity management.
There may also have been a little socialising last nightโฆ ๐๐
Ready for Day 2! ๐

๐ง Neurological Toxicities | IO Champions Masterclass
Weโre continuing our multidisciplinary journey through immune-related toxicities with Dr Aisling Carr, Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, exploring the complex world of neurological toxicities associated with immunotherapy.
Neurological immune-related adverse events may be relatively uncommon, but they can be complex, potentially severe and present in many different ways โ making early recognition, specialist input and close collaboration between oncology and neurology incredibly important.
A key focus of todayโs session is the opportunity for collaborative working between neurologists and oncologists โ bringing together expertise from both specialties to support diagnosis, investigation and management of these challenging toxicities.
A huge thank you to Dr Aisling Carr for sharing her expertise and experience with our IO Champions in Birmingham today! ๐

๐ฌ New and Novel Immunotherapeutics | IO Champions Masterclass
Weโre looking to the future of Immuno-Oncology this morning in Birmingham as Dr Adam Januszewski and Professor Anna Olsson-Brown take our IO Champions through the rapidly evolving landscape of new and novel immunotherapeutics.
Their session explores:
๐งฌ The diversity of bispecifics through the lens of lung oncology
๐ฏ Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs)
๐ญ The future of immunotherapeutics
With the range and complexity of cancer treatments continuing to expand, understanding what is coming next โ and what these developments could mean for patients and the teams caring for them โ is an important part of preparing our IO Champions for the future.
A fascinating look at innovation beyond established immune checkpoint inhibitors, the emerging therapeutic landscape and where Immuno-Oncology could be heading next.
A huge thank you to @AdamJanuszewski and @AOlssonBrown for sharing their expertise with our Champions! ๐

๐ Just how far are our IO Champions travelling from?
This weekend, Birmingham becomes the meeting point for healthcare professionals working in Immuno-Oncology from across the UK and Ireland. ๐ฌ๐ง๐ฎ๐ช
From Inverness and Aberdeen in the north to Devon, Southampton and Sussex in the south โ and from Cork and Limerick to Maidstone โ our first IO Champions Masterclass is bringing together colleagues from an incredible range of locations.
One of the key aims of the IO Champions Masterclass is not simply to deliver education, but to help build a connected community of people who can take that learning, enthusiasm and network back to their own teams and regions.
Seeing the geographical spread of our Champions really brings that ambition to life.
Welcome to Birmingham, IO Champions! ๐

๐ What is the IO Champions Masterclass?
This weekend, the Immuno-Oncology Clinical Network (IOCN) is bringing together healthcare professionals from across the UK for two days dedicated to learning, sharing and collaboration in Immuno-Oncology.
The IO Champions Masterclass has been designed to support and develop healthcare professionals with a passion for improving the care of patients receiving immunotherapy.
Across two packed days in Birmingham, our IO Champions will learn from experts from across oncology and a wide range of specialist disciplines, exploring everything from the fundamentals and future of immune checkpoint inhibitors to novel therapies, service development and the recognition and management of complex immune-related toxicities.
But the Masterclass is about more than education.
We want to bring people together.
By connecting colleagues working in Immuno-Oncology across different professions, specialties, hospitals and regions, we hope to create a community of IO Champions who can share knowledge, learn from one another and take ideas and expertise back to their own teams and services.
Topics across the two days include:
๐ฌ Immune checkpoint inhibitors โ where we are and where we're going
๐งฌ Novel and emerging therapies, including BiTEs, ADCs, TILs and vaccines
๐ฅ Developing effective Immuno-Oncology services
๐ Pharmacology and immunosuppression
๐ซ๐ซ Complex immune-related toxicities across multiple specialties
๐ค The role of the multidisciplinary team
๐ Metrics, outcomes and real-world data
๐ก Sharing experience, challenges and best practice
Ultimately, our aim is simple: to strengthen the Immuno-Oncology community and help healthcare professionals deliver the best possible care for patients receiving immunotherapy.
We can't wait to welcome our first group of IO Champions to Birmingham! ๐

๐ซ Advancing Cardio-Oncology
As part of hashtag#CancerImmunotherapyMonth, we're highlighting the collaborative work of the Immuno-Oncology Clinical Network (IOCN) in improving the recognition and management of immune-related cardiac toxicities.
In 2024, the IOCN, in collaboration with the British Cardio-Oncology Society (BCOS), published the Joint Consensus Statement:
๐ Baseline Cardiac Assessment in Individuals Receiving Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors
The document provides practical recommendations to support clinicians in implementing baseline cardiac assessment and promoting consistent, evidence-informed practice across the UK.
Building on this work, a multidisciplinary working group is currently developing a further consensus statement focused on the management of immune-related cardiac toxicities.
๐ซ Expected release: Autumn/Winter 2026
Through continued collaboration between oncology and cardiology specialists, we aim to strengthen patient safety, improve outcomes and support healthcare professionals delivering immunotherapy.
Together, we are helping shape the future of cardio-oncology.

๐ก Building a National Framework for irAE Management
As part of #CancerImmunotherapyMonth, we're highlighting ongoing work being led through the Immuno-Oncology Clinical Network (IOCN).
Following concerns regarding inequitable access to immunosuppressive medicines used in the management of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) toxicities, the IOCN and UKSACT Board engaged with NHS England in November 2025 to discuss the challenges faced across the UK.
This work led to the establishment of a national multidisciplinary working group tasked with developing a consensus framework for the comprehensive management of immune-related adverse events (irAEs).
In May 2026, experts from across the UK came together at the IOCN two-day meeting in London to begin shaping this work through a series of collaborative workshops.
Our shared aim is to ensure that patients receive the greatest possible benefit from immunotherapy while reducing the risk of serious toxicity and treatment-related complications through consistent, evidence-informed pathways of care.
By working together nationally, we hope to:
๐ก Improve equity of access
๐ก Strengthen patient safety
๐ก Improve patient outcome
๐ก Support healthcare professionals delivering immunotherapy
๐ก Promote consistent, evidence-informed management of irAEs
โ We are now bringing together the outputs from these workshops to begin developing a proposed consensus framework.
Together, we are helping shape the future of immunotherapy toxicity management.
