Everyone talks about qubits. Almost nobody explains them. A classical bit is 0 or 1. Always. A qubit can be in a superposition (both 0 and 1 at the same time) until you measure it. When you measure it, it collapses to one state. The power isn't that it's both at once. The power is that before measurement, it evolves according to quantum mechanics, and you can engineer that evolution to solve certain problems exponentially faster. The catch: qubits are fragile. Any interaction with the outside world collapses the state before you want it to. That's called decoherence. Building a useful quantum computer means keeping thousands of qubits isolated long enough to compute. RIKEN just got 5 silicon qubits to cooperate at 99.9% fidelity. Useful scale needs thousands.

Ben Horowitz on treating your story as your strategy, and why founders often skip writing it even though it's one of the most important parts of the job: "The story of the company is also the strategy of the company... In your mind, you're kind of adjusting that strategy a little bit at a time every day. But then a quarter later, it's actually pretty different than what you started with." "So it's really important that you keep upgrading your story. The articulation of your story. I would definitely recommend it be in written form." "Something that you can share with everybody in the company, and everybody you're recruiting, everybody you're trying to raise money from, all your constituents, every customer." "The problem that I think founders have is it doesn't feel like work. Like, 'What are you doing today?' 'I'm working on my story.' That doesn't sound like work." "Because it doesn't feel like work, people don't do it, but it's probably one of the most important parts of the job." @bhorowitz w/ @speedrun GP @Tocelot

Perhaps the myth that adults can't learn new skills is tied to the myth that education requires formal schooling. @naval

Almost everything digital depends on time synchronisation. GPS: needs nanosecond accuracy to give metre-level position. Internet routing: packet timestamps prevent data collisions. Financial markets: trades are legally required to be timestamped to microseconds. Power grids: synchronisation prevents voltage collapse. Atomic clocks lose 1 second every 300 years. Optical clocks: 1 second every 300 million years. Nuclear clocks (TU Wien, 2026): 1 second every 30 million years. Every time you use a credit card or open a map, an atomic clock made it work. We built civilisation on time.

One interesting irony is that computer science at Stanford started as a subdivision of the math department. Now computer science has gotten so large that it’s acquiring math as a subdivision. Similar to the military funding the Internet via DARPA, and now the Internet (via drones, robots, satellites, and the like) turning the military into a division of the Internet. All part of the network taking over functions from the state that gave it birth. purl.stanford.edu/rc200wt231…

India should learn from the world’s best: • US in technology • China in manufacturing • Japan in robotics • Germany in engineering • South Korea in semiconductors • Singapore in governance • Taiwan in chip manufacturing Comparing India with Pakistan and Bangladesh won’t make India a developed nation.
