➡Today, on World Food Day, we take time to appreciate millions of people from underprivileged communities who labour hard to ensure they are food secure, and to raise children in environments pummeled by challenges.
➡Also this being the International Year of The Woman Farmer, we remember the women across our continent who, tasked with primary care giving, work hard on barely enough land to ensure their families are well fed.
➡The official theme of the day: “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow", requiring our look into use of data, technology, and artificial intelligence to transform agrifood systems, combat global hunger, and make nutritious food affordable and sustainable, marries beautifully with a call we have had sustained here at ISAAA AfriCenter for ages: use of agricultural biotechnology to feed the world.
➡This day calls for a relook of policies, communication streams, and collaboration avenues among different players to ensure biotech crops, for example, which harbour beneficial characteristics such as drought tolerance, quick yielding and pest resistance, can be adopted by farmers across the continent without hassle.
➡We particularly give our flowers to women who are in pursuit of food security through use of tech an innovation in the continent, and for whom we have formed a community in the African Women for Biosciences (AWfB) (africenter.isaaa.org/awfb).
➡We equally appreciate the men who have battled hard to ensure women have a voice, once greatly suppressed by society. 🙏🏽
➡Next year, in June, we shall assemble in Dakar, Senegal 🇸🇳 for the #ABBC2027 (abbcsymposium.org/) to agree on, inter alia, how researchers, having developed quite useful technologies, can build trust among societies for easier adoption.
Our aim? To harness the tech we are building and effortlessly feed Africa.
Happy International World Food Day!!!!

Every 9 minutes, a person dies of rabies.
Rabies still kills more than 59,000 people every year. Yet countries around the world have shown that, by putting existing knowledge and tools into action, dog-mediated rabies can be eliminated.
This year’s World Rabies Day theme, “Stronger Together,” reminds us that eliminating rabies requires that we all work together.
When animal and human health systems work together and if we vaccinate our dogs, we can prevent rabies from reaching people and move closer to a world where no one dies from this entirely preventable disease.
We must work together to stop rabies before it reaches people.

⁉️ How do we build a more #ClimateResilient #LivestockSector while recognising the vital role animals play in the lives and livelihoods of billions of people?
This was at the heart 💚 of “Can It Scale? A Pitching Session for Livestock Investment Solutions” at #ClimateWeekNYC, co-hosted by @Heifer International, International Livestock Research Institute (@ILRI ), Environmental Defense Fund and Global Dairy Platform Inc.
We were particularly proud to see Dilip Bhandari, our Sr. Director of Programs - Livestock Technology and One Health, Asia, takes the stage to present a model that addresses a critical gap in rural communities: access to affordable, high-quality animal health services.

Can it scale?
At #ClimateWeekNYC, our very own @dbhandariLR pitched a plan to train 3,000 women and youth as agro-vet entrepreneurs, bringing animal health and climate-smart services to 1.5M smallholder households.
Scalability = farmer value + local capacity + markets + finance.
The energy is high in Nairobi, Kenya today as #ScalingWeek2026 begins!
Convened by the CGIAR Scaling for Impact program and @ILRI.org, Scaling Week brings together 400 scaling champions across food, land and water systems to work on real-world scaling questions and challenges.

Discussions during the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 #AFSForum2026 on the future of livestock keeping in Africa revealed that, despite having one-fifth of the world’s cattle, the continent produces only about 5 per cent of global milk while spending between $70 billion and $100 billion annually on food imports. The beautiful city of Lyon 🇫🇷 is saying bienvenue - welcome! - to the world.
From small island countries and areas to the most populous nations, all attending the global #OneHealth Summit - co-hosted by France and Indonesia 🇮🇩 - underscoring the crucial interconnectedness of human, animal and ecosystem health.
The first of its kind, the high-level gathering brings together heads of state, ministers representing diverse portfolios, and multilateral institutions - including the One Health Quadripartite comprising of @WHO, he UN Food and Agriculture Organization @FAO, the UN Environment Programme @UNEP and the World Organisation for Animal Health @WOAH.
A pleasure to witness the WHO Western Pacific Region well-represented here, and to begin the week by meeting Ministers of Health Dr Claude Gambey of New Caledonia and @BudiGSadikin of Indonesia.
As well, Hung Nguyen-Viet, Asia Regional Director of the International Livestock Research Institute @ILRI - whom I unexpectedly ran into at the airport!
New Caledonia - a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific - has long embraced One Health.
Key actions include reducing #antimicrobial use in livestock including the territory's pork industry; managing climate-sensitive diseases including #dengue and #leptospirosis; and establishing regional research partnerships such as PREZODE One Health Action in the Pacific.
Indonesia has customised the global One Health Joint Plan of Action (OHJPA), bringing together stakeholders from multiple ministries and a range of professional associations including ILRI.
Indonesia's OHJPA's focus includes health systems strengthening through enhancing One Health; reducing risks of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic epidemics and pandemics; and controlling and eliminating endemic zoonotic, neglected tropical, and vector-borne diseases.
For its part, ILRI has been involved in Indonesia's Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative, to balance food production with environmental sustainability; avian influenza control among backyard poultry systems; improving animal disease reporting and response; and strengthening mixed farming systems with livestock and crops.
So, you see how it's all connected - humans, animals, the environment!
I'm looking forward to contributing to, and learning from, the Summit - with gratitude to France and Indonesia for co-hosting this symbol of multilateralism in health. 🙏
