1/50 This is a one-stop-shop thread for all the states in our #50Weeks50Constitutions series.
Remember, the threads are in chronological order of oldest state constitution. First up, New Hampshire:

1. Before the “united States of America” declared their independence in July 1776, a few of them had pretty much done that already by adopting their own written constitutions. The first one was New Hampshire, on January 5 of that year. #50Weeks50Constitutions

Today, SCOTUS denied cert. in @IJ's SWAT-takings cases.
Justices Sotomayor and Gorsuch wrote respecting denial in the related case of O'Donnell v. Chicago.
As in IJ's previous petition in Baker v. McKinney, the Justices said the issue would benefit from even more percolation.
Both of @IJ’s SWAT-raid takings cert. petitions have been relisted from the long conference.
Hadley v. South Bend and Pena v. Los Angeles will be re-conferenced this Friday.
Whether you read Proust or not, if you live in Cambridge you can still make today's Short Circuit Live on the history of zoning! A few last-minute RSVPs are coming in right now.
Just had a very Harvard moment. Am in a bar by campus (for this event tomorrow, which you can still RSVP for!) with the copy of Proust I just started reading. A waiter spies it & asks "oh, is that the Lydia Davis translation?"

Amazing the culture impact of Monty Python. Mike Tirico just saying "the correction has just been corrected" about a Cowboys v. Packers possible interception is obviously am homage to "Those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked have been sacked."

Matt Yglesias wants you to die in a plane crash, apparently. nytimes.com/2026/10/16/opini…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Yglesias argues US 1500-hr pilot rule (vs Europe ~200) is job protection raising fares, not safety. Europe has comparable safety per IATA. He says he wants no crashes, just to end a pretextual rule. Colgan pilots exceeded 1500 hrs.

A good rule of history is that student protests are almost never about any coherent set of policies.
It's fun to run around and break things, and it's fun when you feel unstoppable doing it.

University of Chicago Students to Protest at Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Demand End to Federal Ban on Onion Futures
Student-led group For Our Futures will rally Monday morning to call for repeal of the 1958 Onion Futures Act
On Monday, October 19, at 8:30 a.m., members of For Our Futures, a student-led organization from @UChicago, will gather outside the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (@CMEGroup) headquarters to demand the repeal of the Onion Futures Act of 1958, a nearly 70-year-old federal law prohibiting futures trading in onions.
The Onion Futures Act, enacted following allegations of market manipulation in the 1950s, singled out onions for a prohibition on futures contracts that remains in effect today. For Our Futures is calling on Congress to repeal the ban and restore the ability of onion growers, buyers, and traders to participate in a regulated futures market. Onions remain the only commodity banned from futures trading in the United States.
The protest will feature a giant inflatable onion costume, protest signs, and dozens of students, and will take place outside the headquarters of CME Group, one of the world's largest derivatives marketplaces and the historic center of American onion futures trading.

The center-right cannot condemn authoritarianism in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela while excusing it in El Salvador. Our commitment to democracy cannot depend on the ideology of the autocrat.
Bukele’s security gains are real. The dangerous leap is to conclude that dismantling democracy was necessary to achieve them. This is the Bukele trap, and its appeal now extends even to Costa Rica.
Here is my new article for the @idualliance monthly newsletter: “The Bukele Trap: The Authoritarian Temptation Facing Latin America’s Right.”

CLAIM: The ICE agents wore construction vests and masks that concealed their faces. There was no reasonable way to identify them as ICE agents.
FACT: This illegal alien was the subject of a targeted enforcement action. What makes someone a target for immigration enforcement is whether or not they are illegally in the U.S.
