🌿 IGBC Beyond Green A Green Building Congress 2026 Series From Green Buildings to Net Zero Buildings: How is India’s Sustainability Agenda Is Evolving? India's green building movement has helped make energy efficiency, water conservation, responsible material use, and better indoor environments integral to sustainable construction. The next phase builds on that foundation, with a stronger focus on measurable outcomes and defined performance targets. What is changing? 🔹 From saving energy to addressing energy demand: Efficient building envelopes, passive design and high-performance systems remain essential. The challenge is balancing a building's long-term energy demand with renewable energy. 🔹 From conserving water to closing the water loop: Rainwater harvesting, efficient fixtures, and wastewater treatment to reduce freshwater demand. Net Zero Water focuses on how water is sourced, used, treated and replenished. 🔹 From reducing waste to recovering resources: Waste segregation is the beginning. Reducing, reusing, and recycling material helps minimise the quantity of waste sent to landfill. 🔹 From environmental improvements to carbon accountability: Net Zero Carbon requires a clear accounting boundary and strategy to reduce both operational and embodied carbon emissions. These approaches build on green building principles instead of replacing them. The shift is towards more ambitious targets, clearer accounting, and stronger performance. What it means? For architects and engineers: Integrating these goals from the earliest design stages. For developers and building owners: Considering life-cycle costs, systems integration, and long-term operations. For manufacturers and technology providers: Creating opportunities to develop solutions to support measurable results. India's sustainability agenda depends on making these approaches practical, scalable, and relevant across different building types and budgets. The next chapter of green buildings is about building on what works and setting a higher benchmark for what buildings can achieve. What should the industry prioritise as it moves towards Net Zero? 🌿 IGBC Beyond Green A Green Building Congress 2026 Series Can India Build Its Way to Net Zero? The Critical Role of the Built Environment. Yes, but not through buildings alone. India's 2070 Net Zero ambition will require progress across buildings, energy, industry, materials and urban infrastructure. But the good news is India has a foundation to build on. 🔹 Clean energy: India has achieved 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, creating a foundation for further decarbonisation. 🔹 Green building frameworks: Energy-efficiency codes, rating systems and a growing network of trained professionals are helping improve building practices. 🔹 A clearer roadmap: NITI Aayog's 2026 Net Zero studies identify pathways for the buildings sector, including stronger codes, low-carbon materials, financial incentives and workforce development. What needs to happen next? ▪️ Make green building practices accessible and widely adopted, across project types and budgets. ▪️ Make low-carbon materials and technologies commercially viable through innovation, better financing and stronger supply chains. ▪️ Retrofit existing buildings while ensuring new construction supports long-term climate goals. ▪️ Connect building-sector progress with cleaner electricity, lower-carbon industrial production and better-planned cities. The opportunity is significant. NITI Aayog estimates that 86% of the building floor space expected to exist in 2070 is yet to be built. Decisions made today can help avoid locking in high emissions for decades. No single technology or sector can deliver Net Zero alone. However, sustained investment, effective implementation, and collaboration can help India align its development with a lower-carbon future. Can India make low-carbon development the standard for tomorrow's buildings and cities? What needs to change first? 🌿 IGBC Beyond Green A Green Building Congress 2026 Series Energy, Water, Waste and Carbon: Why Net Zero Must Be Viewed as an Integrated Agenda? We think Net Zero is only about how much energy a building uses. But it is actually about how the entire building manages resources and reduces its environmental impact. Through its Mission on Net Zero, launched on #EarthDay 2021, IGBC promotes a holistic approach across four priorities: 1. Energy: Reduce demand and integrate renewable energy. 2. Water: Conserve water and reduce dependence on freshwater sources. 3. Waste: Reduce, reuse and recycle to minimise waste sent to landfill. 4. Carbon: Reduce emissions associated with materials, construction and building operations. These priorities are interconnected. Energy choices affect carbon emissions; water and waste management influence resource use; and material selection affects a building's carbon footprint. IGBC's four Net Zero rating systems for Energy, Water, Carbon, and Waste, provide frameworks to help projects address these priorities and demonstrate progress to make buildings and the built environment more resource-efficient and fully Net Zero. How can the industry make this integrated approach the norm? Tell us in comments below.
