IFA is in Bangkok this week for the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings. Secretary General Gregor Sneddon and Caitlin Wald, Specialist, Member Engagement and Network Impact, are joining conversations with partners across health, social protection, finance, care and development on what longer lives mean for economies and societies. One theme running through our discussions is the need to look beyond population ageing as a single-sector issue. Demographic change has implications for health and prevention, labour-force participation, care systems, social protection, public finance and the resilience of communities and economies. We are particularly interested in how stronger investment in healthy ageing and prevention, sustainable care systems, and enabling environments can help countries prepare for demographic change before pressures become acute — and how evidence can be translated into practical policy, investment and implementation. The Annual Meetings provide an important opportunity to listen, learn and connect with organisations working across these different parts of the agenda, and to explore where IFA’s global network can help bring those conversations together. More reflections from Bangkok to come. As world leaders gather for the 81st United Nations General Assembly, IFA is calling attention to a simple question: are the systems we are building ready for longer lives? IFA UN Representative Ariana Elezaj joined the 2026 SDG Moment at UN Headquarters in New York, where leaders reflected on what it will take to accelerate progress towards 2030. In her closing remarks, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed urged participants to look beyond aggregate progress to what development means in people’s lives — including whether older people can count on care, income and a life of dignity. As #UNGA discussions span development, health, climate resilience and financing, population ageing must be part of the conversation. Achieving the SDGs — and shaping what comes beyond 2030 — requires systems that enable people to live not only longer, but healthier, more secure and more dignified lives.

What does it mean to become longevity-ready? That was the question at the heart of IFA’s latest Global Café, the first session in our new series, Longevity Around the World, focusing on South-East Asia. Bringing together regional perspectives from experts Dr. Prakash Tyagi and Prof. Philip O’Keefe, the conversation explored what we have learned over the past decade and, importantly, what action is needed to better equip societies for longer lives. In South-East Asia, demographic change is happening faster than many societies anticipated, while societal attitudes and policy responses have not advanced at the same pace. Despite the region’s diversity, several common challenges emerge, from rural-urban divides and gaps in reaching communities with health services, to the continued burden of communicable diseases alongside a growing focus on NCDs and long-term care. Several priorities for governments emerged from the dialogue, including the need to: 🔹 Listen to local communities. Ensure policies and investments reflect the realities, priorities and needs of the people they serve. 🔹 Scale what works. Build on effective approaches, adapting and sharing them across settings while strengthening coordination and coherence across efforts. 🔹 Strengthen prevention across the life course. Strengthening NCD prevention and management throughout adulthood can help people remain healthier and more productive for longer. 🔹 Recognize the broader economic implications of healthier ageing. Supporting people to remain healthy and active can help sustain workforce participation and strengthen economic capacity, while creating greater scope for reforms such as extending working lives and retirement ages. IFA’s Longevity Around the World Global Café series will continue throughout 2026, bringing regional perspectives into the global conversation on healthy ageing, longevity and development beyond 2030. Earlier this month, statements from IFA's Secretary General Gregor Sneddon were shared during two important discussions highlighting why the rights of older persons must be central to efforts to address inequalities and advance human rights. In the panel discussion on promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights within the context of addressing inequalities, IFA highlighted how inequalities accumulate across the life course and shape the conditions of older age. During the interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, IFA welcomed the report on cognitive impairment and the continuing exercise of human rights by older persons. The statement reinforced a fundamental principle: changes in our circumstances must never diminish our rights. Across both discussions, IFA called for coordinated action across health, care, social protection and community life, with older persons meaningfully involved in shaping the policies that affect them. As work continues towards a Convention on the rights of older persons, IFA remains committed to advancing a rights-based approach to ageing that recognises older persons as full rights-holders and strengthens accountability for equality and human rights across the life course. #HumanRights #OlderPersons #Ageing United Nations Human Rights Council

What will it take to build societies ready for longer lives? The world has entered an age of longevity. As people live longer, preparing for the future requires coordinated action across health and care, employment, social protection, infrastructure, technology, financing and beyond. As highlighted in the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ report to the 81st session of the General Assembly, longevity is not confined to a single sector. It is a cross-cutting governance issue that calls for coherent, whole-of-government approaches to both the opportunities and challenges of longer lives. On 1 October 2026, IFA will mark the International Day of Older Persons with a global virtual dialogue bringing together leaders to explore progress, persistent gaps and priorities for action. The discussion will spotlight multisectoral action and innovation, and consider how the policies, partnerships and investments we make today can help build longevity-ready societies for decades to come. 📅 1 October 2026 🕒 3.00 - 4.00pm CEST | 9.00 - 10.00am EST | 9.00 - 10.00pm CST Register here: ow.ly/bZFp50ZJttT Join IFA as we look beyond 2030 and consider what we need to build today for the longer lives of tomorrow. #Longevity #HealthyAgeing #InternationalDayOfOlderPersons #Ageing
