🚨🚨WOW! This is absolutely amazing to see that Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have won the Nobel prize in medicine for their optogenetic research! Visual optogenetics is a therapeutic modality that uses Gene Therapy to deliver a light-sensitive protein to cells in the retina. This mechanism of entering light to the eye can then stimulate these cells to produce a visual signal that is sent to the brain and thus “overriding” the retinal cells and to restore vision to vision impaired patients. This mechanism is already in clinical development and the most advanced optogenetic therapy is currently Nanoscope Therapeutics’ MOGENRY (formally known MCO-010) - an Optogenetic Gene Therapy aimed to restore vision in Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) patients with a severe vision loss which is waiting for an FDA approval! Absolutely amazing!
BREAKING NEWS
The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
Congratulations to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, recipients of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.
Their groundbreaking work demonstrates the extraordinary impact of light-based technologies across scientific disciplines. By enabling researchers to use light to control the activity of specific cells, optogenetics has transformed neuroscience and opened new possibilities for understanding the brain and biological systems.
The IEEE Photonics Society congratulates the 2026 Nobel Laureates on this remarkable achievement and celebrates another powerful example of how innovations involving light can advance science and improve our understanding of human health.

EEE Photonics Society student volunteers in Shenzhen, China, recently welcomed approximately 50 eighth-grade students for “Illuminating the Future,” a full-day K–12 outreach experience connecting Tsinghua SIGS and Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School.
From LiDAR and 3D imaging to silicon photonics and optical communications, students explored how classroom physics connects to technologies shaping our world. A hands-on fiber-splicing workshop gave them an opportunity to experience that connection firsthand.
Supported by 10 graduate volunteers, the program demonstrates how IEEE student communities can extend their impact beyond campus—connecting local classrooms with university research and inspiring future scientists and engineers.
